The bookies are struggling to split these two ahead of their all-Dutch World Matchplay quarter-final in Blackpool.

Neither player has got this far at the Winter Gardens and nor are they particularly accustomed to long format matches on the big stage aside from any previously lengthy runs in set-play tournaments. As Dirk van Duijvenbode put it during one of his comical answers in the interview below: "I wish it was first to four."

The most prolific 180 hitter on the planet by a mile with a ratio of 0.39 per leg this season but as he revealed above, the success of his game statistically depends if he's consistently getting his first dart in the treble 20. He struggled to do that against Michael Smith and only hit three maximums in 18 legs but thankfully for him, Bully Boy didn't turn up and allowed him to pretty much coast to an 11-8 victory.

Aubergenius was disappointed with his performance despite averaging 98 and if he gets that first dart going then expect to see a bucket load of 180s as we usually do.

His World Cup partner Danny Noppert hits a fair few himself on average (0.28 per leg) but over a long format match it'll be extremely hard for him to challenge in that particular department but what impresses everyone about him now is his coolness under pressure and his new-found stage character. The combination is helping him take his darting abilities to a new level.

The UK Open champion's quiet demeanour away from the oche is of stark contrast to the showman he's becoming on it, and even had the cheek to mock Daryl Gurney's 'blind 100' with a 'blind 180' during an 11-4 second-round victory.

Noppert averaged 102.36 against Gurney and weighed in with four 100+ checkouts during a supremely classy display and that's just what we've come to expect from him these days.

Van Duijvenbode, by his own admission, can think too much up on that stage whereas the unflappable Noppie is arguably more suited to keep his game together for longer periods inside the pressure cooker of the Winter Gardens.

I'm going for Noppert to win through but his opponent to hit most 180s in a 3/1 double.

Predicted Scoreline: 12-16

Gerwyn Price (4/9) v Jose de Sousa (13/8)

  • Overall H2H: 2-3 (TV: 0-0)
    2022: 0-0 (TV: 0-0)
  • Seasonal Average
    Price: 96.37
    De Sousa: 94.35
  • 180s per leg in 2022
    Price: 0.26
    De Sousa: 0.31
  • Checkout % in 2022 (Stage events only)
    Price: 41.03%
    De Sousa: 32.54%
  • 100+ checkouts per leg won
    Price: 15.96%
    De Sousa: 12.01%
  • Match Treble % in all comps (Win, most 180s, highest checkout)
    Price: 25.84%
    De Sousa: 33.33%

Gerwyn Price is starting to rediscover his mojo in Blackpool following a difficult few months that he put down to the fatigue factor of a gruelling Premier League season combined with endless travelling for the European Tour, World Series and bread and butter Players Championship events.

The Iceman's victories over Martin Schindler (10-8) and Dave Chisnall (11-8) with high 90s averages owed more to his old fighting characteristics rather than the blockbuster standard of darts we've become familiar with over the past couple of years and even he admitted it was a relief to feel that he's getting the 'rub of the green' again in tight situations.

'I had to look twice myself'! Gerwyn Price on his hilarious lookalike video with Fallon Sherrock!

No matter how he picks up the wins, the confidence and swagger is returning and so too will those 100+ averages on a regular basis but he'll probably need one to fend off a seemingly revitalised Jose de Sousa.

The Special One had endured a troubled 2022 but now, like Price, is one win away from his first appearance in a World Matchplay semi-final.

De Sousa averaged 103.26 in a scintillating clash with Rob Cross, who also managed 103, while he's also regaining his usual 180 prowess that had deserted him recently, hitting 15 of them in 35 legs across his two matches (0.43 per leg).

Although Price is finding his range (13 in 36 at 0.36 per leg) I'd say it's a relatively safe assumption about who'll edge the maximums in a high octane battle.

I'm going to side with the Welshman to get the job done but there's every chance we need extra legs to decide it.

Predicted Scoreline: 16-14
