How long does the race take?
Although the course distance is fixed, the time taken to complete the Grand National varies depending on:
- Ground conditions (soft, good, or firm turf)
- Race pace
- Jumper traffic and obstacles
On average, the race takes around 9–10 minutes from the start to the finish.
The challenge of the distance
The length of the Grand National contributes to its unique status:
Stamina test
Horses must maintain speed over a much longer distance than typical National Hunt races.
Jumping endurance
With 30 fences to clear, endurance and efficient jumping are key.
Race strategy
Jockeys must balance pace and positioning, preserving energy for the final stages.
The combination of distance and obstacles makes finishing the race a significant achievement in itself.
How distance compares to other races
- Most UK chases range from 2–3 miles. With 3m+ considered a marathon distance race
- The Grand National exceeds this, demanding both stamina and precision.
