Made a winning debut (Limerick, 7f soft/heavy) but didn't kick on positively thereafter for Dermot Weld; sold for 21,000gns in October 2018; debuts for Declan Carroll off a 378-day absence; consult the market for advice.
Has three C&D wins on his CV, and was runner-up on three occasions here last winter; 2lb lower than when finishing a weakening eighth of 12 to Samovar over 5f here recently; should strip fitter but a wide draw is problematic.
3lb higher than when winning at Newcastle (6f) in October 2018; hasn't raced too often since (three times); makes his Fibresand debut off a 186-day absence.
Lost her way for former trainer Paul Nicholls and was moved on for £5,500 in August; ran reasonably well for much of the race (always prominent) on debut for Alex Dunn at Kempton three weeks ago; Fibresand debut.
Finished well down the field on return to action (handicap debut) at Newcastle (5f) last month; 2lb lower; significant improvement required on first start at 6f.
Both of his AW wins have come at Newcastle (6f); his recent form is respectable in the context of this race (finished 2¾L second to Pearl Of Qatar at Newcastle latest); place chance.
Driven out to beat Grimsdyke by 3L at Thirsk in August (6f, soft); not disgraced over C&D on her last couple of starts (fourth and fifth) without shaping like a future winner either; 3lb above her winning mark.
Theoretically is handicapped to be competitive; comfortably held third to Awa Bomba over 7f here on his penultimate start; always in rear when last of 14 at Lingfield subsequently; others preferred.
Doesn't tend to win all that often (1-32 career) but equally her consistency can't be knocked either; couldn't match the finishing kick of Shortbackandsides at Hamilton (6f, soft) 43 days ago; is worth trying on this surface.
Running fairly well in defeat at Chelmsford (6f) of late, with those form lines given a loose boost by Gottardo (second) at Newcastle on Friday; placed on his only previous visit to Southwell (Jan 2018); can't be discounted.
Arrives seeking a hat-trick following wins at Chelmsford (7f) and Brighton (6f, soft) - reinstated after an appeal in the first instance; 4lb higher on Fibresand debut.
Maiden (0-9); off the track for 278 days since finishing seventh of eight (25-1) over C&D in January; considered unlikely on the balance of probabilities.
Maiden (0-7); has shown precious little ability since sent handicapping (5f-6f); far safer to look elsewhere for the solution.
Sole win came over 5f at Lingfield (good to firm) in July 2018; unable to reach the leaders when finishing 2½L fourth (50-1) to Sharrabang in a 6f Wolverhampton classified stakes last month.
Forecasts
Rock Sound (7/4), Sir Hector (7/1), Dandy Highwayman (17/2), First Excel (9/1), Kodicat (9/1), Freedom And Wheat (12/1), Gupta (12/1), Wild Flower (14/1), Jill Rose (16/1), Zebulon (22/1), Shellebeau (33/1), North Korea (50/1), Bawtry Lady (50/1), Remission (80/1)
An open contest. The consistent Kodicat is worth trying on this Fibresand surface, while the likes of Dandy Highwayman, Wild Flower and Sir Hector also merit a positive mention. The market promises to be helpful in relation to the returning top-weight Rock Sound, while the C&D specialist First Excel is seemingly inconvenienced by a wide draw. However, the opposite is true for the front-running SHELLEBEAU who is possibly worth chancing for small stakes after showing signs of a return to form on her first start for Alex Dunn at Kempton three weeks ago.
- Shellebeau
- Sir Hector
- Kodicat
