A useful handicapper in 2017, placed in the John Smith's Cup (1m2f, York) and beaten ½L by Wild Hacked over C&D at the inaugural Newcastle Good Friday fixture (Cl 2); twice placed this year; steadily easing in the weights.
Slowly away and soon struggling in the Lanark Silver Bell at Hamilton (1m4f, heavy), but a winner either side of that poor performance (Ffos Las and Chepstow); 6lb higher than when beating Astromachia by 2½L latest; AW debut.
6lb higher than when winning over 1m2f on Gosforth Park Cup Night here in June; travelled smoothly into contention over C&D last month, yet didn't quite see out the extra yardage in finishing 1¼L third to Lopes Dancer; slightly vulnerable?
139-rated hurdler (3-4); campaigned exclusively on the Flat since returning from a 14-month absence in June; possibly has found an official rating of 84 to be just beyond his capabilities since winning a Ripon novice (1m4f, good to soft) in August.
Productive at this track for Keith Dalgleish (1m2f-1m4f) during the 2017/18 AW Championships season (chased home Karen McLintock's stable star Dubawi Fifty in January 2018); fitness is very much taken on trust; one to monitor for the future.
Thrives at Newcastle; was an emotional winner for Brian Ellison (formerly with Harriet Bethell) over C&D 16 days ago, beating Asian Angel and Autretot by ¾L and ½L respectively; a 4lb rise will make life more challenging; is still to be feared.
Pleasing strike-rate on the AW (4-13); met trouble inside the final furlong and awarded a race by the Wolverhampton stewards (1m4f) in April; returned from a five-month break, running to an equivalent level of form at York (Cl 4) last month.
Handicap debutant; impressive when making all to win a Carlisle novice (1m1f, heavy) in August; turned over at odds-on at Hamilton (1m½f) subsequently, albeit that winner Modakhar could be fairly useful; tackles a new trip on AW debut.
Ran out the winner on his first couple of handicap starts (1m4f, Leicester/Salisbury); perhaps didn't stay the 1m6f trip when seeking the hat-trick at Chelmsford in August; off since (62 days); this race commands a career best.
Forecasts
Paths Of Glory (11/8), Beyond The Clouds (5/1), Mistiroc (7/1), Arabic Culture (8/1), Autretot (8/1), Lopes Dancer (11/1), Global Falcon (14/1), Roman Stone (28/1), Paddyplex (40/1)
In a nutshell, this race is best described as a devilishly tough. Lopes Dancer adores this track, and he was an emotional recent winner for the Bethell family. A subsequent 4lb weights rise will make life more difficult, although he can probably confirm placings with Autretot (suspect stamina). Paths Of Glory has been progressive for Hugo Palmer and he makes his AW debut seeking a third win in four starts, while Beyond The Clouds is a versatile individual. For small stakes a chance is taken on the AW specialist ARABIC CULTURE. Admittedly he needs to improve in order to land this Class 4 handicap, but equally his York comeback run was encouraging.
