Weighed In

Off time: 14:21  |   Winning time: 1m 11.88s

1
(14)
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-7  |  J: Dane O'Neill |  T: C Hills|  OR: 65|  BF
5/4

Back from a winter break with his best effort to date when finishing runner-up on handicap debut at Lingfield (7f, standard) just under three-weeks ago; dropped in trip and switched to Tapeta; player.

2
(13)
Age: 9|  Weight: 9-7  |  J: Jason Hart |  T: M Herrington|  OR: 65|  CD
12/1

Generally a solid performer at Newcastle, and just 1lb higher than when dead-heating with Muatadel over C&D in February; below-par at Lingfield latest; entirely possible that he's beginning to feel the effects of a long winter campaign.

3
(1)
Age: 9|  Weight: 9-6  |  J: Cam Hardie |  T: A Brittain|  OR: 64|  D
22/1

Strongest at Wolverhampton (7f) but also reasonably effective at this track; 2lb higher than when beating De Little Engine by a short-head on his penultimate start; first racecourse appearance over 6f since May 2018.

4
(10)
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-5  |  J: Harry Russell |  T: B Smart|  OR: 63
9/1

Difficult to win with (1-26); has tumbled down the weights over the course of the past 12 months (22lb); possible that he'll find his level in Class 6 races, albeit difficult to be overly confident over this 6f trip off a three-month absence.

5
(11)
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-3  |  J: S H James |  T: Phillip Makin|  OR: 61|  BF|  C
7/2

Has rediscovered a spark since joining first season trainer Phil Makin; overcame a tardy start, yet was never getting to the all the way winner Lucky Beggar over 6f at Thirsk (good to firm) latest; well-weighted; obvious chance.

6
(2)
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-3  |  J: Kevin Stott |  T: P T Midgley|  OR: 61|  D
33/1

6f turf winner (Redcar and Thirsk); back from a six-month absence with a couple of 5f spins on the AW in recent weeks; never involved, kept on late for pressure when finishing sixth of nine to Gowanbuster.

7
(12)
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-3  |  J: J Fanning |  T: Mrs A Duffield|  OR: 61|  CD
14/1

Both of her wins have come at Newcastle (5f-6f), and she was beaten just a neck by Archimedes off a similar mark in mid-January (5f); not so sharp in her last three outings; visor applied.

8
(6)
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-2  |  J: Phil Dennis |  T: Katie Scott|  OR: 60|  CD
33/1

Relatively progressive in this kind of company for Galashiels trainer Katie Scott until turning in a couple of modest performances of late; made all when beating Steelriver by a neck over C&D in February; 2lb higher.

9
(7)
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-1  |  J: D Tudhope |  T: L A Mullaney|  OR: 59|  C|  D
12/1

Southwell regular (5f-6f) who has more than paid his way during the winter months (a four-time winner); now rated 10lb higher than when beating Spirit Power by a comfortable 1½L over 5f here in January.

10
(8)
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-0  |  J: P Hanagan |  T: M Todhunter|  OR: 58
33/1

Nine-race maiden; formerly with William Haggas (sold for 30,000gns in October 2017); generally poor since joining Martin Todhunter - has fallen 17lb in the handicap; difficult to ascertain what is her optimum trip.

11
(5)
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-0  |  J: Rowan Scott |  T: J Hodge|  OR: 58
100/1

Six-race maiden; regressive for former trainer Ralph Beckett and moved on for a mere £2,800 in January 2019; Tapeta/stable debut.

12
(3)
Age: 9|  Weight: 8-10  |  J: J P Sullivan |  T: Mrs R Carr|  OR: 54|  D
22/1

Has tumbled down the weights since the summer of 2017 when most productive at Catterick (6f); handles the majority of AW surfaces (both wins at Southwell); never in the hunt at Thirsk latest (6f); simply not the force of old?

13
(9)
Kroyp16
Age: 5|  Weight: 8-10  |  J: Ben Robinson |  T: Ollie Pears|  OR: 54|  CD
11/1

Not abundantly talented but scarcely runs a bad race at Newcastle (6f-7f); 2lb lower than when finishing 2½L fourth to Porrima over 7f here in January; goes reasonably well for Ben Robinson; ought to make the frame.

14
(4)
Age: 7|  Weight: 8-9  |  J: A Mullen |  T: Mrs R Carr|  OR: 53|  CD
22/1

Breakthrough AW win over C&D in December (idled when just fending off Lucky Lodge); off since and returns from a 3lb higher mark with James Sullivan perhaps surprisingly taking the mount aboard stablemate Meshardal.

Rewaayat (5/4), Scuzeme (7/2), Kentuckyconnection (9/1), Kroy (11/1), Gorgeous General (12/1), Duke Cosimo (12/1), Cuppacoco (14/1), Meshardal (22/1), Grey Destiny (22/1), Tadaany (22/1), Rockley Point (33/1), Pretty Passe (33/1), Rantan (33/1), Poyle George Two (100/1)

Verdict
Phil Makin didn't take too long before making a positive impression in the training ranks, and the well-weighted SCUZEME can add another winner to his tally. He appears to have rediscovered his spark since joining this first season trainer (formerly with David Barron), overcoming a tardy start and making good late progress to vainly chase home Lucky Beggar at Thirsk 16-days ago. With a proven ability on the AW (a course winner in 2017) he's strongly fancied to make his mark in this company. The lightly-raced Rewaayat is an obvious danger, whilst the course specialist Kroy can make the frame.
  1. Scuzeme
  2. Rewaayat
  3. Kroy
