Placed in Irish point-to-points he looks to have been campaigned with handicaps in mind (makes his debut here); better than his finishing positions so far. First-time tongue-tie and hood now employed; likely to show more given this sort of test.

Steel Express20
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-11| J: James Best| T: Miss L Blackford| OR:  99| C

Long-standing maiden although he went close to breaking that record last time; runner-up at Chepstow to Late Shipment. Not the most consistent so no guarantee that he will go close to following up that performance; not one to rely on.

Took advantage of a fall in the weights to record the first of back-to-back victories with the second win coming here over shorter in testing conditions (visor helped both wins). Handicapper has looked in charge since, others appeal more.

Did show some improved form prior to a wind op but her only run since that surgery saw him run well below her previous level of performance. That was her handicap debut (finished midfield; merely passed beaten horses); needs further handicap help.

A course winner over a shorter trip the handicapper appears to be cutting him some slack now and he has looked to be stepping in the right direction on occasions. Starting to look on a decent if not lenient mark; a danger if he does bounce back.

Progression looks to have been steady rather than spectacular for this point-to-point winner (looked a work in progress on handicap debut over C&D). That run should have brought her on; further progress likely and of interest off this mark.

Age: 6|  Weight: 11-2| J: Matt Griffiths| T: J Scott| OR:  90| BF
6/5
A switch to handicaps has seen him make progress taking a Kempton handicap over 2m5f before running as well in defeat last time at Taunton. Had no problem with the longer trip last time; up 6lb here but sure to cope with the rise; leading player.

Mr Magillt21
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-13| J: Nick Scholfield| T: Kieran Burke| OR:  87
16/1
Unexpected 40-1 winner when scoring at Wincanton from way out of the handicap in February over 2m5f on good ground. Back to form after a blip last time with a creditable second; stayed this trip, should give his running.
9
Horse silk
The Greenvetp416
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-10| J: R T Dunne| T: Mrs L J Young| OR:  84
33/1
Winning point-to-pointer whose form under Rules has proved modest; ran poorly in a first-time tongue-tie last time out (first run back from a wind op). Returns from a fair absence here and not one that would be included on any shortlist.

American Lifet,v20
Age: 12|  Weight: 10-10| J: Kevin Jones(3)| T: M F Harris| OR:  84| CD
10/1
Enigmatic sort who has proved hard to win with (not won for two years, that win came on the Flat). Ought to be able to make an impact of a mark such as this on his old form but despite the third place last time he does appear rather laboured now.

Ruby Foolp145
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-5| J: Charlie Deutsch| T: R Mitford-Slade| OR:  79
33/1
Back from a break with the hood that accompanied the cheekpieces last time left off. Has won in point-to-points but looks rather limited over hurdles (no impact n handicaps so far); would be a surprise to see her take a hand in this.

Age: 6|  Weight: 10-4| J: James Davies| T: Henry Oliver| OR:  78| BF

Well supported in the market last time (back from three months off) but nothing really went right for her (badly hampered early on). Earlier runs have suggested that there is more to her than shown; one to watch for market support again.

Forecasts

Urtheonethatiwant (6/5), Hot Ryan (11/2), Cushuish (9/1), American Life (10/1), Eddy (10/1), Steel Express (14/1), Talkingpicturestv (16/1), Mauna Kea (16/1), Mr Magill (16/1), Tanrudy (25/1), Ruby Fool (33/1), The Greenvet (33/1)

Verdict

Plenty that come under the heading improving types with Urtheonethatiwant leading the way having shown some progressive form in his last two starts and there may be more to come from this likeable type. HOT RYAN made a very pleasing start to life in handicaps last time and given that she needed that experience she’s given the vote here. Tanrundy on his point-to-point form is well handicapped and has already attracted some market support and that confidence should be noted. Talkingpicturestv can’t be left out of the equation having not got the best of runs last time but having shown promise in the past with Mr Macgill rounding out those with a decent chance in a competitive heat.
  1. Hot Ryan
  2. Urtheonethatiwant
  3. Tanrudy
