Successful in a 1m4f Class 5 handicap on the AW at Wolverhampton early last month, but met trouble in running over shorter from a 7lb higher mark in stronger company at York latest. Back up on trip, and similar ground to contend with today.
Regressed as a juvenile and has been comfortably held in both starts in handicaps including over this trip at Catterick recently. Dropped 1lb, and might be suited by this forecast softer ground, but definitively needs to prove he stays this trip.
Won over 1m at Thirsk on his handicap debut as a juvenile (September 2016), and with that success coming on soft ground, further rainfall won't be a concern. Shaped as if he needed the comeback run at York last month when fifth to Alqamar (Brimham Rocks sixth) and deserves another chance over this trip.
In good nick on the AW over the latter part of the winter winning over the extended 1m1f at Wolverhampton in January and finishing twice a runner up from this mark (67) since. Below par switched back to turf recently and needs to show more than at Ripon latest.
Hasn't shown bundles of promise so far this year, but a step up to this trip could be in order. Kept on without getting competitive around the sharp circuit at Chester (1m2f good) last month on handicap debut, and races from the same mark today.
Has done the majority of his racing on the AW winning over 1m2f at Lingfield in February, but solid enough since switched to turf more latterly. Not beaten too far in either of his recent starts, and whilst 1m2f is probably his trip, he's worth a try over further in order to see how he handles it.
Fair to say he's not gone on as expected since winning at Kempton in August 2016 (1m), but appears to have drawn some benefit from a gelding operation over the winter. Improved on his Nottingham reappearance when upped to 1m4f for the first time at Catterick latest, and not discounted despite the stable being largely out of form.
Fought out a good battle with subsequent Thirsk winner Dyna Might (pair clear) over 1m4f at Beverley last week (good to firm) and no surprise to see him turned out quickly (penalised) as a result. Likely to be suited by this slightly shorter trip, but really soft ground (if it arrives) might be a concern.
Looks to be a slow learner and hasn't shown an awful lot in five career starts to date. However, dropped 3lb since the switch to handicaps and his German pedigree (out of Naomia) suggests that this trip and slow ground together could bring about some improvement.
Stable enjoyed some success at the weekend, but this filly appears to have a limited amount of ability having finished a held seventh of twelve in a 1m6f Redcar maiden handicap last week. However, dropping in the weights to a career low of 51, this ground might play to her strengths (looks slow).
Had three quick runs in maidens over the course of six weeks to qualify for a handicap mark (between 1m2f and 1m4f), but that form amounts to little. Makes his handicap debut rated just 48, but tough to imagine that he'll be good enough in this race.
Forecasts
Brimham Rocks (13/8), Nordic Combined (5/1), American Craftsman (13/2), Nobleman (8/1), Kuraka (9/1), Critical Thinking (9/1), Legato (12/1), Zamadance (16/1), Silver Gleam (20/1), Good Time Ahead (33/1), Company Trader (50/1)
Strength and stamina might well come into play over this trip if the ground turns up fairly soft, and a number of these runners are stepping up to this trip for the first time. Whilst that often brings about further improvement, it probably will pay to focus on those horses with fewer question marks against their names. AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN made a positive impression at Beverley last week, pulling clear with and fighting off the subsequent Thirsk winner Dyna Might, and despite the rise in grade (and weights), he can be fancied to go well.
