Resumed winning ways with a bit to spare at Ripon (6f, good to firm) in June. Far from disgraced when fifth in the Great St Wilfrid won by Intrinsic Bond over the same C&D last time, but he looks vulnerable under top-weight here.

Left low-key reappearance well behind when edging out Makanah in a big-field York handicap (6f, good) in May. Excuses when down the field in the race won by Bergerac back on the Knavesmire last month and he has to enter calculations.

Winless for best part of two years, but rarely has he failed to give his running in the interim, performing with great credit on each of his seven starts this season. Encountered traffic problems when fifth to Bergerac at York (5.4f, good) last time and bold show anticipated off the same mark.

Beaten by Night On Earth in a Nottingham minor event last month, but the steady pace counted against him there and he subsequently looked better than ever when landing a 5f Ascot handicap last weekend. 10 lb rise tolerable and he wasn't beaten far when fifth in this race in 2021.

Winner of back-to-back 5f Ascot handicaps last summer, but he has failed to fire on each of his three starts so far this season, finishing nearer last then first in the 22-runner York contest won by Bergerac last time.

Lost his way last term, but more like it this time around, landing back-to-back 5f handicaps here during the summer. Acquitted himself well in listed company at Beverley (5f, good to firm) recently and he's not without each-way hope.

Back on the scoresheet at Thirsk in July and produced his best effort yet when landing the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon (6f, good to firm) next time. However, form took a turn for the worse returned to Thirsk last time and he's probably a shade too high in the weights for now.

Dual 5f/6f winner last September who got right back on track in first-time visor when fourth of 22 behind Bergerac at York last month. Failed to build on that at Haydock last time, though, and he's likely to find a few too good again here.

Hit the target twice over 6f at Windsor in June/July and wasn't disgraced when sixth of 15 in a handicap over the same C&D (good to firm) last time. However, current mark leaves little margin for error and he's unproven on ground this slow.

Has stood up well to an intensive 2022 campaign, winning three times and making the frame on several others occasions. Should again give his running, but this mark is probably just beyond reach.

It's taken time for him to get going this season, but he's clicked again of late, going close over 6f at Windsor prior to scoring in good style at Sandown (5f, good) just over 3 weeks ago. 8 lb rise looks manageable and he needs considering.

Very capable when on-song, as he reiterated when just touched off at York (5f, good to soft) last month. Not in the same form since, but continues to edge down the weights and the recent rain will not do have done his chance any harm.

Right back to his best when taking 5f handicap at Ascot in July and not discredited under a 5 lb penalty when fourth at Musselburgh next time. Latest effort at Haydock wasn't one of his better ones, though, and he looks vulnerable.

Verdict

WHENTHEDEALINSDONE has been raised 10 lb for his decisive Ascot success, but that looks manageable given that he was on the premises in this race 12 months ago off a similar mark. The 4-y-o represents the yard that saddled Oxted to bag this prize in 2019 and he shades preference ahead of Makanah, who didn't enjoy the rub of the green at York last time and he will be a big threat if avoiding traffic problems. Chipstead did the job well at Sandown last time and he also merits respect.
