Successful twice upon joining George Boughey last summer and went close a couple of times for that yard at around 10f during the spring. Not at best on last 2 starts but a switch back to his previous stable may perk him up from sliding mark.

Racked up a 4-timer last summer (two coming over C&D) and ended campaign with a good fourth in a Sky Bet Series race over C&D in September. Been performing with credit of late, no match for a 3-y-o at Newmarket (10f) 2 weeks ago, but he remains on a workable mark.

Goes well at this track, making it 3 wins from 4 attempts with a clear-cut success over 1m in June. Isn't one for maximum faith, as his exploits at Doncaster/Ascot either side indicate, but a return to this venue a likely plus at least. Back up in trip.

Low-mileage 4-y-o who showed benefit of reappearance run at York when coming home best off a strong gallop to score by 5 lengths at Pontefract (1m) in July. Creditable second at Hamilton (9f) has followed and he looks worthy of a step up to 1¼m now.

Goodwood novice winner at 2 yrs who ran best race to date granted the run of things when third at Ripon (9.7f) 2 starts back. Faded out of things in a class 2 handicap (12f) at first-named venue 11 days ago and this rates more suitable.

Fair form in 4 starts on AW in Ireland, and (gelded) he showed improved form to make a winning yard debut at Newcastle (1m) in October. Improved further to score readily on return at Musselburgh (1m) in June and he's interesting again in hat-trick bid.

Got off the mark for the season at Carlisle (9f) in July and, having disappointed here next time, he was quickly back to form when just failing to get up at Pontefract (1m) 4 days ago. Not discounted back up in trip.

Chester novice winner (7f) as a juvenile who has yet to kick on in pair of handicaps so far this campaign, never a threat when last of 7 at Redcar (1m) in June. Short break/step up in trip needs to have positive effect now.

3-y-o who came out on top in a strong race for the grade over C&D in May, edging ahead close home. Had excuses when fourth at Southwell (11f) 9 days ago, left with too much to do/raced on inner, and he remains one to be interested in. Big player.

Definite promise in trio of novice/maiden events that have worked out well, shaping as if a stronger gallop would suit ideally when third behind Asaassi at Salisbury (9.9f) in June. Gelded since and definitely more to come now handicapping.

Had a good spell on AW during the winter, winning twice but he's essentially just been ticking over on turf of late, 4½ lengths fourth behind re-opposing Forgivable at Redcar (10f) 11 days ago. Yet to win beyond 1m. Engaged 6.45 Ayr Saturday.

Reached a fair level in 4 starts as a juvenile and improved again this campaign, confirming promise of Pontefract third in June when off the mark in game style at Redcar (10f) 11 days ago. Promises to do better still at this sort of trip.

Forecasts

Award Dancer (3/1), Rich King (11/2), American Flag (11/2), Miramichi (13/2), Forgivable (7/1), Solar Joe (15/2), Luminous Light (16/1), Jewel Maker (18/1), Lady Caroline (22/1), Anythingtoday (25/1), Sucellus (25/1), Bringitonboris (33/1)

Verdict

An intriguing handicap with the vote in favour of RICH KING. Off the mark in a C&D handicap that has worked out well, Ed Bethell's 3-y-o had excuses on his latest outing at Southwell and he gets the nod to confirm his present mark is still a workable one. American Flag's form in maiden/novice events is also working out well and he's of interest on the back of being gelded. Miramichi and the hat-trick seeking Award Dancer complete the shortlist.
