Only beaten a neck at Newcastle last week, for which she is 2lb well-in. Been consistent in five runs for this yard, including when winning at Brighton (5½f) on stable debut in September. One for the shortlist.

Won off 2lb higher on seasonal debut at Newcastle (6f) but has been a mixed bag since then. Ran well there two starts ago in third but was beaten 6½L last time after being hampered a furlong out. Hard to know what to expect.

Had a purple patch earlier in the year with two wins (Newcastle/Nottingham) and a good second at Windsor (all 5f). Only beaten one rival in two starts since a break, however, and is best watched for now.

Last win came over 5½f at Bath but bounced back to form the last twice when third at Lingfield and fourth here (both 7f). Drop back to 6f should help and 1lb back from the handicapper entitles her to place claims.

Rattled off an August hat-trick over 5f and 6f moving 17lb up the handicap in the process. Not got involved since then and although the handicapper is slowly relenting, is still 2lb above her last winning mark. More needed.

Won twice in September at Brighton (6f) and Bath (5½f), going up 16lb as a result. Plausible reasons for defeat since at Leicester (7f, too keen) and Wolverhampton (5f, missed the break) and isn't ruled out if things go to plan back over 6f.

Off the mark in a Windsor maiden (6f) last month and beaten a neck eight days later by Lordsbridge Boy in a C&D handicap attempting a follow-up. Back into Class 5 company will make life trickier but has some of the better recent form.

Easy to put a line through his run at Chelmsford when he hung badly throughout. Should appreciate the return to this C&D, where he denied True Belief by a neck six weeks ago. They are closely matched on that form.

Won a novice event at Bath (5f) in June but has struggled in three runs since. Missed the break at Chelmsford (6f) four weeks ago when beaten 5L into seventh, and despite another 2lb drop, is overlooked for the time being.

11-race maiden but has gone close twice over ths trip this campaign. Fourth of six in a Yarmouth maiden last time and despite a career-low mark here, will need to be 100% ready after 101-days off.

Well-backed on third outing for this yard to finish third at Yarmouth (6f, heavy) three runs back but has bettered that form in defeat in both runs since at Chelmsford and over C&D. Hood added for the first time and any market move is significant.

Hassaad (7/4), Lordsbridge Boy (4/1), Devils Roc (11/2), Phoenix Star (6/1), True Belief (8/1), Bugler Bob (10/1), Good Answer (25/1), Moveonup (25/1), Knockabout Queen (25/1), Altar Boy (25/1), Gilt Edge (33/1), Arishka (50/1)

Verdict

Having been well-backed on two of his last three runs, PHOENIX STAR has evidently shown connections enough to land a contest like this. The application of a hood could well be the final piece of the jigsaw and he gets the verdict. Knockabout Queen has improved this year and is excused her two recent defeats, where she ran well each time, whilst Lordsbridge Boy will appreciate the return to a left-handed track and is spin at Chelmsford last week.
