Three-time winner for Nicolas Clement in France at up to 1½m before missing two years, fair run on reappearance/stable bow, but not seen since well held in the Ormonde Stakes in May, and percentage call is to oppose off his big weight.

Ran well in the face of a stiff task when fifth in the Cambridgeshire on penultimate start, and improved further when winning a heavy-ground handicap at Nottingham next time. 5lb rise fully justified, and he is the one to beat here.

Showed up better than finishing position suggests in the Cambridgeshire, and back to very best when 1½L fourth of 19 to Dubai Icon at York (1m2½f) last time. Races off same mark here, and not taken lightly.

Never competitive in the Cambridgeshire on penultimate start, but bounced back to form when ¾L second of 19 to Dubai Icon at York last time. Now 2lb worse off with fourth-placed Badenscoth for 1L beating, and little to choose between them.

Has raced in some tough races since winning over 1½m at Haydock in April, and back to form in face of a lesser task at Kempton last time. Off 10 weeks since that run, and drop in trip another concern.

Hasn't won since landing a novice at Salisbury in 2017 but has run some of his better races here and was far from disgraced when seventh to Lord North in the Cambridgeshire last time. Should not be far away having been eased in the weights since.

Third at Pontefract in July on easy ground, but beaten favourite here next time, and he has run well below form on both starts since. Return to softer conditions may help, but he needs to find his best form.

The Jean Genie36
Age: 5|  Weight: 8-9| J: J Mitchell| T: W Stone| OR:  82| BF| D

Completed a double when winning over 1¼m at Brighton (good/firm) in April and has run well in defeat in all four starts since returning from a break, the latest when second at Chelmsford. Likely to make a bold bid from the front again.

Awake My Soul11

Hasn't recaptured his best this year despite the help of the handicapper, and while he was third at Pontefract last time, he lagged 10L behind the front pair, and he needs to step up markedly on that.

Zzorot33
Age: 6|  Weight: 8-8| J: Jason Watson| T: Mrs A J Perrett| OR:  81| CD

Has produced a series of creditable efforts in handicaps this year, gaining reward at Sandown (1¼m, good/firm) in September when fitted with a tongue tie. Beaten 6L when second at Epsom since, and may be in the handicapper's grip now.

Ran well at Goodwood in August, but has just one win to his name, and his form has tailed off on recent starts. Best efforts have come on top of the ground, and well held on heavy last time, so has something to prove in forecast conditions.

Regular Incomep11
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-7| J: J Quinn| T: A West| OR:  80| D

Best efforts have come on heavy ground at 1¼m, winning at Chester and matching that form when second of 10 to Rajinsky at Windsor last time. Might not find going deep enough unless it rains.

Rake's Progress11
Age: 5|  Weight: 8-7| J: Angus Villiers(7)| T: H Main| OR:  79| C| D

Won comfortably at Nottingham on his penultimate start, but proved a disappointment on heavy ground he handles at Pontefract last time, and he looks opposable in this company.

Forecasts

Majestic Dawn (2/1), Alternative Fact (7/1), Severance (7/1), Cockalorum (9/1), Badenscoth (12/1), Zzoro (12/1), Awake My Soul (14/1), Regular Income (14/1), Rake's Progress (16/1), The Jean Genie (16/1), Dalgarno (25/1), Mordred (25/1), Enigmatic (50/1)

Verdict

MAJESTIC DAWN made a bold bid to make all in the Cambridgeshire before winning at Nottingham, and Paul Cole's progressive handicapper looks the answer in a competitive event. Badenscoth was behind Cockalorum at York last time, but also ran well in the Cambridgeshire, and could give the selection most to do.
  1. Majestic Dawn
  2. Badenscoth
  3. Cockalorum
