Fourth time lucky when breaking the maiden over 7f at Brighton (good to firm) last month; has more to do under an incurred 7lb penalty (is respected nevertheless).
Poet's Voice colt (20,000gns juvenile); evidently knew his job on debut, showing battling qualities to down the odds-on favourite Bronze River at Bath (1m, firm); faces a different test here under a 7lb penalty; stablemate of Villa Paloma.
Inexpensive yearling (2,200gns); 66-1 when finishing down the field on debut at Redcar (7f, heavy) 13 days ago; look elsewhere.
Showed minor improvement from debut (Carlisle) yet still finished last of six to Island Storm in a 1m maiden here last month; a fair degree of additional improvement is required.
Casamento colt (£13,000 juvenile); plugged on at the one pace when beaten in excess of 6L (fourth) by Embolden in a 7f novice at Redcar (heavy) a fortnight ago; a switch to an artificial surface may suit; stable in-form.
Returned from a five-month absence when finishing in excess of 7L fourth to the promising High Accolade in a recent C&D maiden (Villa Paloma and Charmore both behind); could feasibly take another step forward.
Mastercraftsman colt (€25,000 yearling); 25-1 when finishing last of ten to King Carney at Nottingham (1m+, soft) last week; a rare runner at Newcastle for the Oxon trainer Paul Cole (0-4).
Sir Percy gelding (€22,000 yearling); low-key so far, never reached better than a midfield position when finishing eighth of 11 to Convict at Redcar (7f, good) 23 days ago; AW debut.
£5,000 yearling; ran respectably on debut at Thirsk (sixth) but failed to build positively on that initial experience on return to the same North Yorkshire venue just over a week later (eighth); stablemate of Wadi Al Salaam.
Outstrip colt (€10,000 juvenile); virtually identical efforts in two starts over 6f at Catterick (good to firm); if able to break more effectively (dwells) that would enhance his overall chances immeasurably; stablemate of Top Flight Cool.
Swiss Spirit filly (cost a mere 800gns as a yearling); 100-1 when last of 11 to High Accolade on recent C&D debut; most unlikely.
Fountain Of Youth filly (20,000gns juvenile); seeks that elusive first win (2223); has clearly shown that she handles this Tapeta surface (runner-up to Huraiz in August), although she does need to prove her stamina reserves beyond 6f.
Rock of Gibraltar filly (£17,000 yearling); 14-1 when finishing a weakening seventh of 11 to High Accolade in a recent C&D maiden; stablemate of the penalised Zabeel Champion.
Forecasts
Zabeel Champion (8/11), River Cam (10/3), Never In Red (8/1), Got The T Shirt (11/1), Master Spy (18/1), Itwouldberudenotto (28/1), Villa Paloma (33/1), Wadi Al Salaam (40/1), Top Flight Cool (50/1), Peerless Percy (50/1), Binyon (80/1), Copperlight (125/1), Charmore (250/1)
RIVER CAM sets the standard in an essentially winnable novice auction stakes. The James Tate-trained filly has shown a consistent level of form and while she must prove her stamina over this new trip (7f), it should be noted that her dam Cadeaux Power did manage to win over 7f on turf (admittedly as a four-year-old). The sneaking suspicion is that the penalised pair Never In Red and Zabeel Champion are vulnerable under their respective 7lb penalties, so a purely speculative each-way alternative is the Richard Fahey-trained Itwouldberudenotto.
- River Cam
- Itwouldberudenotto
- Zabeel Champion
