Consistent horse who has two C&D wins next to his name this season, most recently in similar class 5 contest eight days ago. Was due to rise in the weights and now races from 2lb out of the handicap but is in excellent form. Leading contender.

Hasn't won since August 2017 but was consistent before finishing a never-nearer eighth of 19 at York (7f, soft) last month. Step back in class and distance is a plus but has a bit to prove now.

Put average runs behind him when registering two wins on the spin at Ayr and Catterick, beating Tricky Dicky in the process, before a narrow defeat in 6f Hamilton handicap. Raised 1lb for that effort but no reason why he shouldn't go close again.

Shaped encouragingly at Haydock two starts ago before a dismal run at Ayr (6f, good) last time out. Still 4lb above last winning mark and best watched despite his tendency to put in a surprise performance.

Age: 6|  Weight: 9-11| J: K Stott| T: P T Midgley| OR:  73| CD
10/1
C&D winner in class 3 contest last season but hasn't replicated that form this year, including when seventh at Thirsk (6f, good to soft) most recently. Shaped better than the result suggests and only 1lb above last winning mark. Each-way claims.

Scuzemeh12

Started off in good form for new stable before finishing fifth of of seven at Hamilton (6f, good to firm) last month. Wasn't beaten far that day and was hampered at a crucial stage and likely to go close.

Got the better of Scuzeme at Thirsk two starts ago before flopping when eighth of 10 at Ayr (6f, good) on latest start. Draw is ideal but has more to do at the weights and likely to find one or two rivals too good.

Put two disappointing visits to this track behind her when swooping late to land C&D last month. First-time cheekpieces helped that day and they remain on but has 5lb handicap rise to contend with. Solid claims.

Ran with credit on first two starts this season before disappointing as favourite in 7f Catterick handicap last time out. Raced keenly that day and first try over this trip is a plus, but needs improvement to be competitive.

Five-race maiden who regressed on her last start in class 4 Hamilton handicap (6f, good) on her latest start. Out of a sire who improved with races and age, but more is required on previous form to be involved.

Age: 6|  Weight: 8-9| J: Phil Dennis| T: R M Whitaker| OR:  57| CD
14/1
C&D winner in 2017 but hasn't been able to score this season and has flopped on his last three starts, including eighth of 11 over C&D last month. 1lb below last winning mark but needs to turn his form around. Best watched.

33/1
Good third in similar C&D handicap on penultimate start in June but failed to improve on that effort 6f Carlisle handicap last time out. Now races from 1lb out of the handicap and has place claims if replicating his run two starts ago.

Mystical Moon60
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-7| J: F Norton| T: D C Griffiths| OR:  53| D
50/1
Bulk of her best form is on the AW and two starts of turf have yielded no success and was never in contention when fifth of 13 at Chelmsford (6f, standard) on latest start. Races from 4lb out of the handicap and likely to find this tough.

Forecasts

Tricky Dicky (11/4), Scuzeme (9/2), Mujassam (5/1), Magical Effect (17/2), Mr Orange (10/1), Gullane One (11/1), Round The Island (14/1), Penny Pot Lane (16/1), John Clare (16/1), Princess Palliser (25/1), Cosmic Chatter (33/1), Mutafarrid (40/1), Mystical Moon (50/1)

Verdict

In an open contest where some of these rivals have been taking each other on in similar contests, the preference is for SCUZEME. His defeat last time out doesn't reflect the nature of the race and would've been challenging for the win if he wasn't badly impeded at a crucial stage and he can continue his upward curve for his trainer, who has impressed so far in his rookie season. Mujassam was also unlucky not to win last time out and has been in good form recently and despite the draw not being ideal, he represents solid each-way claims, while the consistent Tricky Dicky is likely to be challenging for minor honours despite his lofty weight alongside Mr Orange.
  1. Scuzeme
  2. Mujassam
  3. Tricky Dicky
