Not disgraced when fifth at Goodwood (7f; good) last time. Previously won on Lingfield AW on AW Championships Day. Has to carry top-weight in this field though which is no easy task.

Last few runs have all been respectable. Not disgraced at Epsom (7f; good) last week when finishing fifth of 12. Should post another solid effort in what represents another competitive assignment. Each-way claims.

Ran okay on reappearance at York (1m; good to firm) when seemingly lacking for fitness. Won over C&D on sole visit to this venue two years ago and should run a big race. Hasn't ran on the AW since that course success.

Needed the run when travelling very well for a long way in a hot handicap on Oaks day at Epsom (1m; good). Serious player if able to cope with the fairly quick turnaround (ran just eight days ago).

Highlight of last years campaign was a good third in a hot sales race at the Curragh (6f; good to yielding). Stiff enough mark for that though, and makes AW debut. Others preferred.

Short-head winner at Ascot (1m; good to soft) recently. 4lb rise for that success seems harsh, as this is probably as competitive, though 3lb of that is offset by her jockey. Gone close to winning on each of her three starts at this track.

Claimed a competitive prize at Goodwood (7f; good) recently. Had been slightly inconsistent prior to that and up 4lb he has struggled to defy such lofty marks in the past. Has it all to do against better treated rivals.

2-2 on the AW prior to finding the 2000 Guineas all too much. Makes handicap debut off a fair enough mark. Could surge right back to his best after being given time to get over the Guineas.

Step back up to 1m looks the right move after seemingly being outpaced over 7f on both starts this year. That was especially the case when runner-up at this track when making seasonal return. Has a consistent AW profile and mark remains unchanged.

Has ran very well on each of his four visits to this track. Entirely possible that the return to the AW could spark something of a revival after a couple of uninspiring runs on turf lately.

Off the mark in 2019 with a commanding victory at Kempton (1m; standard to slow) 17 days ago. Upped significantly in grade (Class 4 to a Class 2) but that was only his second run on the AW and he could have more to offer.

Forecasts

Name The Wind (2/1), Qaroun (9/2), War Glory (5/1), Commander Han (6/1), Bacacarat (9/1), Bless Him (10/1), Nicklaus (16/1), Apex King (25/1), Hot Team (25/1), Goring (25/1), Bubble And Squeak (25/1)

Verdict

It would be foolish to write off Name The Wind so early in his career. The bar was set way too high when he contested the 2000 Guineas, and prior to that he looked a promising AW recruit. It would be no surprise to see him back to that level if back to his best after a short break. Qaroun has been crying out for the step back up to 1m, and should go close at a track he has gone well at in the past. However, it is hard to get away from the claims of NICKLAUS who travelled with plenty of zest on his seasonal return at Epsom in a very competitive race. He lacked for fitness at a crucial stage then, but should be much straighter now and can defy his career-high mark.
