Stamina-laden mare who should always be feared when she has her favoured conditions North of the Border at Ayr; course winner (1m6f, heavy) in September 2017; high in the weights but this is a more suitable test than 1m4f around Newcastle.

Bought recently from Dan Skelton for £13,000; hasn't run on the Flat since March 2017 but does have previous here at Carlisle, winning a Class 5 handicap over 1m6f (good to soft) for Andrew Balding in September 2016.

Appreciates some cut in the ground; a back-to-back Pontefract winner (2m2f, good to soft) last autumn, fending off a number of today's rivals in gaining those wins, including So Near So Farhh, Royal Flag and Rubenesque; realistic contender.

A proven mud-lark and a winner over both hurdles and on the Flat, this mare can be expected to benefit for her reappearance run behind Grey Mist at Ripon three weeks ago, with that being her first competitive start for 18 months.

7/4
Class 6 course winner (1m6f, heavy) in September 2018; has continued to progress and is in excellent fettle so far in 2019. However, probably has work to do with the likes of Grey Mist and Bodacious Name on the basis of previous clashes.

Split today's rivals Bodacious Name and Rubenesque when finishing a neck second at Pontefract (2m2f) last October; appeared to be steadily working back to form with a second placed finish to Jedhi at Haydock (1m6f) earlier this month; 1lb higher.

Cornerstone Ladp55
Age: 5|  Weight: 8-13| J: G Lee| T: Micky Hammond| OR:  65
6/4
A very adept hurdler with cut underfoot, as he again demonstrated when winning off a mark of 139 over 2m at Newcastle on Grand National Saturday; largely untested on the Flat since late 2017, and potentially very nicely handicapped.

Veteran stablemate of Cornerstone Lad; tailed off 12th of 13 behind Grey Mist at Ripon (2m, good to soft) three weeks ago; has a mountain to climb in order to figure positively in newly applied cheekpieces.

Forecasts

Cornerstone Lad (6/4), So Near So Farhh (7/4), True Destiny (11/4), Grey Mist (7/2), Bodacious Name (4/1), Rubenesque (7/1), Royal Flag (12/1), Glan Y Gors (12/1), Attention Seaker (16/1), Question Of Faith (20/1), Only Orsenfoolsies (33/1), Wynford (100/1)

Verdict

A grade below the earlier fillies' handicap, but the highlight of Friday's Carlisle card with a whole range of consistent and thoroughly likeable stayers in action. Grey Mist seeks a six-timer for Northumberland-based trainer Karen McLintock and there's every likelihood that he can deliver the goods after winning with plenty in hand off a 5lb lower mark at Ripon. Both Rubenesque and Bodacious Name are considered to be realistic contenders on the basis of strong staying form around Pontefract. However, the talented hurdler CORNERSTONE LAD gets the nod with ample 'juice' underfoot, having shown marked improvement since competing more regularly on the Flat in 2017.
  1. Cornerstone Lad
  2. Grey Mist
  3. Bodacious Name
