8/1
Difficult to win with nowadays, but is much better than a Class 7 handicapper; 6lb lower than when finishing second to the dead-heaters Fareeq and Archie Stevens (over C&D) on return from a similar absence in April 2018.

Admiral Rookeb10
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-10| J: Alistair Rawlinson| T: M Appleby| OR:  51
3/1
24-race maiden who hasn't seen his fortunes transformed (yet) by the astute Michael Appleby; drops to a career low handicap mark (48); relatively unexposed wearing blinkers; first start over 5f for many a moon (very keen over 1m latest).

Poppy Jag148
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-7| J: J Mitchell| T: K Frost| OR:  48| D
6/1
Winner on turf at Nottingham (5f) in August 2018, but still searching for a first win on the AW (0-10); makes her Fibresand debut.

Rock In Society7
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-4| J: Tim Clark(3)| T: J Butler| OR:  45| BF
5/1
Former Irish racer (0-11); keen early and ultimately well beaten on stable debut in a 6f Chelmsford Classified Stakes (5/2f) last week.

Coiste Bodhar42
Age: 8|  Weight: 9-4| J: Jane Elliott(3)| T: S Dixon| OR:  45| CD
17/2
Regular visitor to this track (a five-time Southwell scorer); hasn't done enough in recent starts to suggest a return to winning ways is imminent.

Horse silk
Tookiedoot151
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-4| J: B A Curtis| T: K P Cotter| OR:  45
14/1
15-race maiden; bought for a mere €1,000 in November 2018; largely untested on the AW (0-1 on Polytrack), albeit very difficult to build any form of solid case for her chances.

Jean Excelsp16
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-4| J: L P Keniry| T: S R Bowring| OR:  45
25/1
Unruly in the paddock and finished last of 14 on handicap debut at Newcastle (5f) last week; treat with immense caution in newly-applied cheekpieces; very risky proposition.

Men Unitedv6
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-4| J: Aled Beech(7)| T: S R Bowring| OR:  45| D
16/1
Sole career win came back in 2015 (Lingfield); raced prominently until weakening from the furlong pole at Newcastle (5f) last week; only marginally more appealing than his stablemate Jean Excels.

Robbian114
Age: 8|  Weight: 9-4| J: Ben Sanderson(5)| T: C Smith| OR:  45| D
33/1
0-12 on the AW; dwelt and always in the rear (finished last of 14) when last seen in competitive action over C&D 114-days ago; makes no appeal whatsoever.

Horse silk
Gunnabedunb123
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-11| J: Jamie Gormley(3)| T: I Jardine| OR:  49
7/2
Has slipped steadily down the weights since November 2018 (a total of 12lb); campaigned exclusively on Tapeta on the AW so far (0-7); best run came on sole start over 5f; more interesting than the vast majority in newly-applied blinkers.

(9)
Horse silk
Dotib119
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-7| J: Nicola Currie| T: B R Millman| OR:  45
20/1
Cost 40,000gns as a foal; hasn't finished in front of too many of her rivals in three career starts (6f-7f); blinkers on for handicap debut from a lowly mark in a dire race.

Forecasts

Admiral Rooke (3/1), Gunnabedun (7/2), Rock In Society (5/1), Poppy Jag (6/1), Groundworker (8/1), Coiste Bodhar (17/2), Tookiedoo (14/1), Men United (16/1), Doti (20/1), Jean Excels (25/1), Robbian (33/1)

Verdict

All of those declared are unlikely to ever find a better winning opportunity than in this Class 7 handicap, which in truth is potentially one of the weakest races run on the All-Weather all winter. Gunnabedun could feasibly take a step forward on Fibresand debut for Carrutherstown handler Iain Jardine in newly-applied headgear, whilst it remains early days for Rock In Society with John Butler. However, although difficult to win with nowadays, the top-weight GROUNDWORKER is a cut above this level of opponent, so with Paul Mulrennan booked to do the steering for Paul Midgley can be strongly fancied to record a sixth career success.
  1. Groundworker
  2. Gunnabedun
  3. Poppy Jag
