Started the campaign with some promising performances on soft ground and wasn't disgraced in a couple of big handicaps at Chester and Newcastle. Others looks better handicapped though and he would have preferred some ease in the ground.

Ran well in Listed company on his return at Nottingham but not quite in the same form since. All his better efforts have come with cut in the ground, including when runner-up at this meeting last year and opposable on that evidence.

Won over C&D in Listed company back in 2016 and got his head back in front here on debut for this yard in May. Not beaten far back in Listed company at Sandown last time and should be thereabouts back in a handicap.

Got his head back in front in a four-runner a race at Pontefract but that doesn't look like strong form and he's barely beaten a rival home in two subsequent starts. Has a bit to prove from this sort of mark.

Won three times last year but signs the handicapper has caught up with him in his more recent starts. Down the order on jockey bookings and others preferred.

Got his head back in front for the first time in three years at York last time out. Eased down in the closing stages that day and there's every chance he will stay this extra 2f. Leading player from 5lb higher.

Career best at Haydock in June and showed this mark may not be beyond him at Windsor next time out. Hasn't been in quite the same form on his last couple of starts though and the step up in trip probably needs to eke out a bit of improvement.

Useful dual purpose performer, his latest win on the Flat coming at Newcastle in the winter. Finished an excellent third in the Northumberland Plate and while he's been below that level twice since, he has claims if reproducing his Plate run.

Won this race last year but he arrived in much better form than what he finds himself in now. 9lb lower as a result at least and De Sousa gets back on board for the first time since that success. Can't be ruled out if he finds the key to him again.

Game front-runner and largely consistent. Seemingly more effective on AW than turf but his mark reflects that at least and he will be hard to peg back if they give him an easy lead on the front end.

Arrives bidding for a hat-trick and the form of his win last time was franked by the runner-up here earlier in the week. That looks a strong contest and there's every chance he will improve for the step up in trip. Leading claims from 4lb higher.

Won a handicap at Ascot's Shergar Cup meeting in game fashion two years ago but only seen twice last year and he's been tailed off in his two runs this time around. Hard to fancy at present.

Got his head back in front at Deauville last time out. Hasn't won on ground this fast though and his stamina for this trip is unproven.

Forecasts

Melting Dew (9/2), Walton Street (9/2), Soldier In Action (7/1), Platitude (15/2), Pacify (9/1), Hochfeld (10/1), Sir Chauvelin (12/1), Sofia's Rock (16/1), Watersmeet (16/1), On To Victory (20/1), Time To Study (20/1), Arch Villain (33/1), Nabunga (33/1), My Reward (33/1)

Verdict

MELTING DEW gives the impression he could be even better over this sort of trip and given that his win from last time out has already been franked by the runner-up at this meeting earlier in the week, he's taken to land the hat-trick here. Walton Street is entirely unexposed and he there could be more to come from Charlie Appleby's stayer this season. Soldier In Action landed this prize last year and remarkably returns on a much lower mark this time around; he couldn't be ruled out if Silvestre De Sousa can get the best out of him once again.
