Won a Doncaster handicap off 4lb lower in June and has not been disgraced since in the face of some stiff tasks. Probably found 1m4½f too far last time.

Has not won for some time, but caught the eye in a better race at Doncaster last time when he did not get the clearest of runs. Has to be considered back down in grade.

Ran a stinker last time, but had previously shaped well on several occasions and is 1lb lower. Connections reach for a first-time visor and it would be no surprise to see him involved if he takes to it.

Has strung together a series of decent runs in defeat, but the down side to that is the handicapper's reluctance to give him a winning chance. Looks sure to run his race and has an each-way shout again.

Jabbaar11

Only win came in June, last year, but has run respectably off this mark in two starts for his current trainer. Seemed to find the tight Chester bends a little troublesome last time and many have more to offer on this more conventional track.

Course winner who is on a long, losing streak, but generally runs well. Has place claims again, but others are preferred for win purposes.

Reeled off a hat-trick of wins in the summer and has not been disgraced in defeat on two subsequent starts off higher marks. Likes cut in the ground so connections will not want to see any sunshine.

Won three times at the back end of the 2015 season, but has drawn a blank since and his handicap mark has dropped accordingly. Has been a bit hit and miss recently, but would be a threat if on a going day. One of two runners for his stable.

Back on a more realistic mark when second at Chepstow last time and the handicapper has left him alone. One to consider now that he is back to form.

Bolted up over 1m 4f at Ripon last month, but the handicapper had his say and she has been well held since. Drop in trip not sure to suit, but a return to form cannot be ruled out.

Brother McGonagall11

Winner of three handicaps this season so it is no surprise that the assessor has exacted his revenge. Tries this trip for the first time, but will do well to get his head in front off his current mark.

Only win came over 1m at this track in June last year. Falling handicap mark and first try at this trip could see him in a better light, but others have more compelling claims. Cheekpieces worn for the first time three starts ago are refitted.

Remains a maiden after eight starts, but ran well to be second off 2lb higher in June and has prospects on that effort over what looks to be his optimum trip.

Did well to finish third at Carlisle last time after starting slowly. Has few secrets from the handicapper, but is capable of a bold show.

Forecasts

Desert Ruler (9/2), Zealous (5/1), Jabbaar (11/2), Abushamah (9/1), Azzir (9/1), Kiwi Bay (10/1), House Of Commons (12/1), Brother McGonagall (12/1), Fire Leopard (14/1), Im Dapper Too (14/1), Maraakib (16/1), Livella Fella (20/1), Scottish Summit (22/1), Polar Forest (25/1), Weather Front (40/1)

Verdict

Many of these look to be in the grip of the handicapper, but it would be dangerous to rule out the evergreen Kiwi Bay, who likes this track, and the consistent Im Dapper Too, who would appreciate some rain. Jabbaar is interesting back on a more conventional track after struggling at Chester, while cases can be made for Azzir and Desert Ruler. The choice, though, is ZEALOUS, who caught the eye in better company last time and would have every chance if replicating that effort.
  1. Zealous
  2. Kiwi Bay
  3. Jabbaar
