A model of consistency over the past eight weeks despite rising steadily in the weights since scoring over 1m2f at Lingfield in May. He just failed to reel in Spinners Ball over C&D a fortnight ago and with that form franked since by Clowance One, a further 1lb rise looks merited.
Hacked up in a 1m4f Newcastle maiden in October, and not seen again until making his handicap debut at York in late May. Could only be described as disappointing on that occasion, but with form already registered at this track should appreciate a return to synthetics, albeit perhaps not a drop in trip. Blinkered.
Has raced over hurdles with regularity (cost £40,000) but without promise since winning a small field Flat C&D handicap in August 2016 for John Gosden. Just 2lb higher on his first Flat start for this yard, and wears blinkers for the first time, but no denying this is a stronger contest.
Raced exclusively on the AW in 18 career starts, with form figures between October 2015 and March 2016 reading; 2,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1. However, no surprise he's struggled more latterly from a vastly elevated mark. Off since March when last of eight and a watching brief advisable.
Did win a 1m maiden here in December 2015, but has generally performed much better at Chelmsford since, winning from a 3lb lower mark in Essex in December. Likely to be better for his Sandown reappearance but this looks a decent contest.
Consistent from a mark of 70 at the turn of the year, winning for Phillip Mitchell over 1m4f here in January. Not quite up to that level in two starts for this yard, but likely to return to form as and when his mark eases slightly.
Looked a likely improver when fifth to Zubayr on debut over 1m4f here in May (third Nadaitak won at Carlisle on Saturday), and duly obliged when running out a narrow winner over 1m2f at Chelmsford thereafter. Given an opening handicap mark in the high 70's and this extra furlong (to Chelmsford) is certain to suit.
Showed courage when winning a maiden over the extended mile at Wolverhampton in February, but found a shade wanting in handicaps on turf since. Dropped 2lb and back on the AW, but that might not be enough in this race.
Likes to race prominently and was denied a hat-trick when upped to 1m2f at Leicester last month. Had appeared strong at the finish when winning over 1m previously (including for this rider), and Bruny Island could well frank his Newmarket form at Wolverhampton on Monday, but the sneaking suspicion is that his stamina could ebb away late on over this new trip from a much elevated mark.
Forecasts
Bush House (5/2), Rake's Progress (11/4), Tom's Rock (4/1), St Malo (5/1), Distant (8/1), Vincent's Forever (25/1), Graceful James (40/1), Tangramm (40/1), Choral Clan (66/1)
Without doubt the best race of the evening on an otherwise low-key Kempton card. DISTANT is an improving filly who should relish stepping back up in trip for her handicap debut. Her opening mark of 79 looks reasonable and she can take full advantage of the allowances that she receives from some fairly talented rivals. These include the likes of the admirable Tom's Rock, who once more promises to be on the premises with his excellent recent C&D effort franked subsequently by Clowance One. Others to consider include the unexposed and first time blinkered St Malo, and the returning August 2016 C&D winner Vincent's Forever.
- Distant
- Tom's Rock
- St Malo
