Both his wins have been on soft ground, so these quicker conditions have got to be a concern, while he has been struggling in handicaps from this mark. Others make more appeal.

Looked to have a bit in hand when scoring over this trip at Newmarket last time (good to firm). This is a slightly stronger contest than that on paper, but the manner of his victory suggests that he is more than capable of going close again.

Was winning his first handicap when doing so at Leicester last time (6f, good to soft), where he had a bit in hand. However, a 7lb rise looks plenty steep enough in this better contest and he is likely to need a career best to follow up.

1-11 so far, that success coming in a 1m Lingfield maiden (AW) last year. Been in good form over 7f on his last two starts and looks worth a try at this shorter trip again. Slight concern that he may not be at his best on fast ground.

Won a good ground Goodwood maiden (6f) last year and her best effort yet was when a 2½L runner-up to the exciting Harry Angel in a Newbury Group Two in September. Beaten favourite on her return in Listed company back at Newbury last time, but may have just needed that and looks to have each-way claims here.

Has yet to race on fast ground in 14 starts, which may be coincidence, though could also be by design, and that's a question he has to answer here. In addition to that, he looks to be in the grip of the handicapper for now and others are preferred.

Won a Carlisle novices' contest last year (5f, good to firm) but well beaten from 4lb higher in handicap company last time and has a bit to prove for the moment.

Is putting together a very good CV and won a similar contest to this when stepped up at Newmarket last time with the promise that there could be a fair bit more to come. 5lb higher today, but unexposed, improving and probably tough to beat.

Won a Wolverhampton maiden (6f, good to firm) last July and has since been keeping Listed company and running respectably. Drops back to this trip after being tried over 7f last time and looks to have each-way claims at best.

Scored here in maiden company (7f, good) in October and after being short of what was required in a Group Three, he was not beaten far back in handicap company over this trip last time. From the same mark today he can get competitive.

Has looked an exciting prospect in winning his last three starts, the first of which was over 5½f here last season. Defied an 8lb rise to complete his hat-trick at Nottingham last time (5f, good to firm) and looked then as though he would have no trouble with this extra furlong, so looks very much short-list material despite going up another 8lb.

Well placed to win three of his six starts, all over this trip and all on the All Weather. Handles good ground well enough when just held from 1lb lower on his turf debut last time and will need another step forward to remain competitive in this better contest, but that is not ruled out.

The form of his Ripon defeat of Dandy Highwayman earlier in the month has worked out well enough, with that rival having won again at Hamilton on Wednesday. Arguably wants slower conditions to be seen to best effect and struggled from 2lb higher last time, perhaps on grounds of class, so has to up the ante again here.

Raised 1lb for a decent effort in defeat at Chester last time (5f, soft) and was just ½L behind Impart when they met at Ripon recently. Has already won over this far, but may have just a couple of pounds too many here and faster ground is a concern.

6f and fast ground suits this gelding, who has won four of his 18 starts and has already proved that he is very competitive from this mark. However, this is stronger than races in which he has run well but not won already this year and the percentage call is to take him on again.

Both wins have been over 5f on good/good to firm, including when springing a 25-1 surprise at Nottingham in April. 13lb higher now, but was competitive from this mark last time and could represent come each-way value in this contest.

Putting together a solid profile, although his rise in the ratings is nothing like as steep as one or two here. Nonetheless, you couldn't fail to be impressed by his 5L win (6f, good) at Pontefract last time and a 6lb penalty for that may not be enough to prevent the follow-up. Interesting.

Has a C&D win to her name (good to firm) from last season, but has been unable to mix it in handicaps since. Blinkers may help, but she is 2lb out of the handicap going into a strong race and is not easy to fancy today.

Forecasts

Ekhtiyaar (5/2), Golden Apollo (5/1), Danielsflyer (8/1), Carlton Frankie (9/1), Gulliver (10/1), Munro (11/1), Perfect Angel (14/1), Wahash (16/1), The Wagon Wheel (20/1), Justanotherbottle (20/1), Smokey Lane (20/1), Kodiline (25/1), Poet's Society (33/1), Tomily (33/1), Private Matter (33/1), Medici Banchiere (33/1), Sayesse (33/1), Impart (40/1)

Verdict

A cracking sprint where the Easterby family should both have significant involvement, Mick with the progressive Carlton Frankie and Tim with Golden Apollo, who has the look of one laid out for this. However, both may have caught a tartar here in EKHTIYAAR. Roger Varian's northern raids invariably bear fruit and this son of Bated Breath looked as though there are a few more notches on the ladder within reach yet, when scoring last time. Danielsflyer, Perfect Angel and Gulliver are others who make appeal, while each-way players could do a lot worse than have an interest on Justanotherbottle.

  3. Golden Apollo
