Won off 76 at this course last season but has been well below that form since. Never landed a blow here last week and looks up against it from top weight.

Been gelded since he was last seen out in November of last year; but is suited by the conditions and has a previous course win to his name. One to bear in mind if the market vibes are right.

Switched yards a couple of times in the last year but has been finding life tough in handicaps from his current rating. May have needed the run when sixth of nine on his seasonal debut at Redcar but still looked as if the handicapper is in control.

Posted a couple of respectable efforts for his current yard - the latest of which confirmed his well being with a near miss at Chester. That was his best performance for a while and, as he races off the same mark this afternoon, he will be be a threat to all if he can use it as a platform to better things.

Ran well above market expectations at Ripon last time out and has to be respected on that effort. His profile is also boosted by a previous C&D success but needs to post very close to his personal best if he is going to add to his tally.

Finished second in the Rose Bowl Stakes (a Listed race for two-year-olds) at Newbury in 2015 and was hit hard by the assessor afterwards. It's taken an awful long time for the handicapper to react with any leniency towards a string of defeats and the gelding looks one to have reservations about on his first start for a new trainer.

A previous C&D winner whose stable won this race last year with a horse on a similar rating (and was even was sent out from the same position in the stalls.) The comparisons stop there and he needs to put in a much better effort than those he has posted since the start of the new season.

Relatively unexposed at the trip and, as he usually needs a couple of runs to put him straight, he should be cherry ripe for this. Perhaps a little vulnerable from this kind of mark but one for the shortlist nonetheless with a useful claimer booked.

Goes well at Thirsk and is 6lb lower than his last wining mark. But does have a bit to find with at least a couple of the rest - may have to settle for a supporting role.

Big improvement required after a lacklustre effort at Ripon last time out. Others readily preferred.

Sound claims on the pick of his efforts; but still 5lb higher than his last winning mark and was well below the standard required on his seasonal return at Catterick last month. An effort which created the impression that he may need at least another outing to get himself fully tuned up.

Ran a blinder to finish second in this race last year and followed it up with a win shortly afterwards. His form then hit the skids and he now finds himself back on a reasonable mark as a result. This doesn't look much tougher than the 2016 renewal, so he is no forlorn hope now he is back on a competitive rating. First-time headgear may also give him an extra push.

Very well treated on the pick of his form but recent efforts have been a tad uninspiring and he needs to pull something out of the fire in what will be only his second start on turf since 2015.

Losing run goes way back to 2013 and, as he was behind a few of these last time out, its very hard to see him turning back the clock. Has won here in the past but seems to hold only a shade of that ability and will to win these days.

Verdict

Luck in running plays a part on the round course as staying balanced on the turns is a crucial factor. And MULLIGATAWNY, who comes her on the back of a highly respectable effort at Chester, fits the bill as one that can keep up the gallop on this tricky surface. Abushamah ran a cracker to be second in this race last year and looks likely to be involved once more, while Carnageo may be a different proposition now that his fitness levels have been topped up by a couple of recent spins. Shouranour goes well at this course and is also worth a check in the betting.
  1. Mulligatawny
  2. Abushamah
  3. Carnageo
