Failed to show much in maidens last season but better signs in handicaps, though took a step backwards when a modest fifth at Redcar (1m1f, good to firm) last time. Dropped 2lb as he steps up in distance.

Spirit Of Rome27
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-6| J: P J McDonald| T: J D Bethell| OR:  59

Predictably struggled in maidens but not beaten too far in three handicaps so far, even though she was last of five in a similar event over C&D last time. Dropped 2lb but needs to pull out a little extra.

Too Many Shots22
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-5| J: Kieren Fox| T: J R Best| OR:  58
7/2
It's now 11 starts without a win, despite producing arguably his best effort to date over 1m4f on the AW at Lingfield last month, finishing second of 14 (Amadeus Rox just behind). Respected on that form but always vulnerable to an improver.

Amadeus Rox22
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-4| J: M Harley| T: A King| OR:  57
9/4
Outclassed in maidens up to 1m but much more positive signs when a close third on his seasonal/handicap debut over 1m4f at Lingfield, finishing just in arrears of Too Many Shots. Improvement to come, shortlist material.

No impact in maidens and a nursery for Tim Easterby and also soundly beaten on his debut for this yard over 1m at Newcastle in November. Dropped 7lb ahead of his return and up markedly in trip.

Diamante49
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-13| J: George Downing| T: D & C Kubler| OR:  52
40/1
Tough going in maidens up to 1m, going off at 150/1 last time out. Much more realistic claims now handicapping over a longer trip, though yard is quiet.

Navajo Star24
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-11| J: B A Curtis| T: M Appleby| OR:  50
14/1
No impact in maidens and it has been a similar story in handicaps so far, finishing well down the field in 1m2f events at Chelmsford and Nottingham. In good hands but mark remains high enough for what she has actually achieved.

Nothing Compares14
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-11| J: J Fanning| T: C & M Johnston| OR:  50
10/1
Yard won this race last year but she looks very much a stable lesser-light on what she has shown so far, including when tried in blinkers two runs back. Raced only on the AW so far, so hopes pinned on turf sparking her into life.

Dyna Mightp121
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-10| J: A Mullen| T: Ollie Pears| OR:  49
33/1
A tendency to miss the break has limited her chances but she showed flashes of promise when staying on to finish fourth of 12 on her penultimate start at Wolverhampton. Of interest over a longer trip with cheekpieces introduced.

Horse silk
Mount Cleshar62
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-9| J: L P Keniry| T: J Butler| OR:  48
25/1
Has predictably struggled in maiden company up to 1m, most recently when failing to act on fibresand. More realistic claims off a basement mark in a handicap over a longer trip which should suit.

Horse silk
Babalugats17
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-7| J: D Fentiman| T: T D Easterby| OR:  46
25/1
Bits and pieces of juvenile promise but ended last season on a low note at Redcar and could never get competitive over this trip on her return at Doncaster, albeit in a stronger race. Better expected here.

Stag Partyp1,t21
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-7| J: Rowan Scott(5)| T: Julia Brooke| OR:  46
22/1
Looked very limited in seven runs for Andrew Balding and has opened up for this yard with two modest efforts on the AW. Hopes pinned on first-time cheekpieces and longer trip eliciting improvement.

Forecasts

Amadeus Rox (9/4), Too Many Shots (7/2), Breakwater Bay (4/1), Spirit Of Rome (8/1), Nothing Compares (10/1), Navajo Star (14/1), Stag Party (22/1), Babalugats (25/1), Mount Cleshar (25/1), Dyna Might (33/1), Silver Gleam (40/1), Diamante (40/1)

Verdict

A race seemingly lacking quality or depth and an ideal opportunity for Alan King's AMADEUS ROX to get off the mark following an encouraging reappearance at Lingfield. This stiffer test looks ideal and he is taken to reverse placings with Too Many Shots with Dyna Might and Mount Cheshar other potential improvers over this longer trip.
  1. Amadeus Rox
  2. Too Many Shots
  3. Dyna Might
