Steps into handicap company for the first time after failing to come close to winning in five maidens from 7f-1m4f. Despite pedigree suggesting that this might be too far, his form suggests that he may actually do better for the stamina test and with the yard's runner in form he is very interesting.
Won a 7f Newmarket maiden in July (good to firm) but has failed to compete in handicaps thereafter, sliding a total of 9lb to today's rating. Another whose pedigree suggests that this marked rise in trip will ask too much of her stamina, though whose two recent runs are at odds with that. Could go very well.
Well beaten in three maidens over 7f and 1m in the autumn, though in her case pedigree very much suggests that she will benefit from this sizeable hike in trip. Get into her first handicap on a mark that her maestro trainer is well used to exploiting and with his runners going well, she could get very competitive.
Didn't manage to get competitive on his handicap debut at Nottingham (1m2f, good to firm) last month and eased 3lb by the assessor as a result. This is a marked step up in trip for one whose pedigree suggests that significantly shorter would suit, so probably best to take a watching brief.
Beaten 24L on his handicap debut at Nottingham last month (1m2f, good to firm) and now eased 3lb by the handicapper. Plenty of middle distance success on his page, so worth a try over this far but lots to prove at the moment. Cheek pieces now tried.
A maiden after eight starts and has struggled to get competitive in all but one of them. Beaten 10½L from just 2lb higher at Nottingham last time out. Now down to a potentially workable mark and upped in trip (dam won over 1m5f), she could begin to have a say and first time hood also make her interesting.
Gradually stepped up in trip last season and again on his reappearance at Doncaster when he couldn't go with them at the business end over 1m4f. Now given more time to get into it and dropped by an eyecatching 9lb, he should be able to finish much closer.
Forecasts
Newt (3/1), Cray (7/2), Sheriff Garrett (4/1), Padrinho (9/2), Kiruna Peak (15/2), Naupaka (12/1), Costa Percy (12/1)
Be warned that despite the small field this looks a tricky race to solve, with most of them of interest for one reason or another, but at the same time with stamina to prove. Connections of Naupaka have cause for optimism on that front in that her dam won over a similar trip, while both Kiruna Peak and Cray have raced as is the extra yardage will be to their advantage. Newt is one to watch in the market as her trainer has pulled off this trick many times before, but it might be worth chancing SHERIFF GARRETT, who has plummeted in the handicap and is another whose recent outing suggests that this distance is within range.
- Sheriff Garrett
- Cray
- Newt
