Shock winner over 1m5f here in late February on his return from hurdles, but backed that run up with a fair second over this C&D next time, and ought to run his race from the same mark off top-weight.

Regularly placed over 2m on the AW this winter (three times a C&D runner up), so consistency is high upon her list of strengths. However, she's only once ever looked like being the possible winner (here in early January), so perhaps her mark of 70 is plenty high enough. Will get help from the saddle with the Champion Jockey booked.

28/1
Three time winner at this track (but never elsewhere), so no surprise she's not figured at Southwell the past twice. However, those runs have seen her mark ease, and are likely to have brought her on considerably (absent since June 2016), so she's one to watch in the market under a 7lb claimer.

Age: 5|  Weight: 9-11| J: S Hitchcott| T: J R Boyle| OR:  69
10/1
Three time turf winner (including twice at this track) who has been absent since racing at Salisbury in September 2016. This trip is a new experience for her and one must wonder if she'll stay, especially in light of the fact it comes on her seasonal return.

Aumerle38
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-9| J: L Morris| T: S Lycett| OR:  67
12/1
Dual Chelmsford scorer in the autumn/winter of 2015 who raced on only five occasions during 2016. Returned from a ten month break over this C&D last month (sixth of seven to Tartan Bute) and surely sharper for that reappearance.

Marshall Aidp11
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-3| J: K T O'Neill| T: M D I Usher| OR:  65
9/2
Fifteen race career maiden (twelve on the AW), but placed on his last three starts, including when stepped up to this trip and just behind runner up Amanto in a C&D handicap won by Tartan Bute late last month.

Southern States114

Showed improved form when upped to 2m by this trainer last back-end. Races from the same mark as he did when runner up to Multigifted at Kempton (November) and when third over C&D to Aurora Grey in December. Back from a break.

Age: 8|  Weight: 8-9| J: Finley Marsh(7)| T: R J Hodges| OR:  53
16/1
Not won since November 2015 (Southwell) and out of sorts for much of 2016. Returned from a seven month break when eighth of nine to Mr Globetrotter (2m) at Wolverhampton recently, and needs to build significantly on that to be involved.

Shrublandb31
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-6| J: Josephine Gordon| T: Alexandra Dunn| OR:  54
7/1
No progress since switched to hurdling by this trainer in December 2016 (bought for 8,000 gns in October 2016). Previously twice placed on the AW over this trip at Chelmsford for Ed Walker, and makes his stable Flat debut with last years Champion Apprentice an eye-catching booking.

Horse silk
Dalavand40
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-3| J: Ollie Jago(7)| T: Mrs L J Mongan| OR:  50
20/1
15 race maiden who has never run beyond 1m5½f, so this step up in trip looks like a clutching at straws approach, and easily ruled out having been beaten in a seller three runs ago and with an inexperienced rider booked.

Forecasts

Amanto (7/2), Miss Tiger Lily (9/2), Marshall Aid (9/2), Southern States (6/1), Shrubland (7/1), Onorina (10/1), Aumerle (12/1), The Quarterjack (16/1), Dalavand (20/1), Alshan Fajer (28/1)

Verdict

Not much makes any considerable appeal in this staying handicap, so the top-weighted Amanto is likely to be on the premises having already proved that his shock 40/1 1m5f course success in late February was no fluke. Alshan Fajer likes this track and he should be noted for any market support, but the Lydia Richards trained SOUTHERN STATES gets the nod. He was in decent form when last in action during November and December and is lightly raced over this trip and should go close if returning from a four month break ready to go.
  1. Southern States
  2. Amanto
  3. Alshan Fajer
