Made all to register sole victory on good to soft ground at Carlisle. Struggled off this mark on sole subsequent start and has been gelded during the winter. Trainer, making the long journey from South Lanarkshire, is having his first runners here.

Winner over a mile here last May and suffered at the hands of the handicapper as a result. Has dropped now to a mark just 1lb higher so has claims if market suggests he is fit and ready.

C&D winner at 20/1 under today's booked rider on good to soft ground last September.Showed that to be no fluke when running well over a shorter trip next time. Was taken out of a race at Redcar when the ground came up fast and rain would aid his chances here.

Winner of four polytrack races at around this trip. Has paid the price for a good spell in July-August last year and handicapper is not keen to relax his grip just yet.

Lightly raced gelding makes handicap debut. Has obvious scope to improve on what we have seen so far. Form of his three maidens is nothing special. Worth a check in the market but may need more time.

Has not looked an easy ride of late and trainer's son gets the leg up here in an effort to cajole the best from him. Blinkers tried last time are retained and drops in distance.

Narrowly touched off on seasonal bow before opening his account in first time blinkers last August. That was one of the few occasions he broke on terms. Blinkers are removed here and set to race off a career high mark.

Fit from two AW runs over shorter and Irish form indicates a preference for this trip and fast ground. Looks one for the shortlist.

Makes handicap debut over a new trip. Pedigree casts a doubt over his ability to get this far but his two staying on finishes at Pontefract over the mile suggest otherwise. Looks well treated based on his latest effort. Yard are 2-9 here and not one to be dismissed lightly.

Winner of three races from 23 starts for a yard that do well at this fixture. His five best runs have come off marks of 68 or lower. Sprang a 25/1 surprise on his last start and is 2lb higher in the weights. Not without a chance if fit and ready.

Has been in good form since stepping up to this trip on the AW recently. Races off a lower mark now switching back to turf and is yet to make the frame on this surface. Has obvious claims if adapting and is undoubtedly in better form now than was the case for previous attempts.

Without a win since scoring of 9lb higher in September 2015. Has recently stepped up to this trip with little effect. Off the track for five months and will come on for the run.

Forecasts

Zorba The Greek (9/2), Light Of Air (7/1), Perfect Quest (8/1), Capton (8/1), Spinart (8/1), Tom's Rock (17/2), Isis Blue (12/1), Outback Blue (12/1), Cordite (16/1), Eez Eh (16/1), The Gay Cavalier (20/1), False Id (25/1), Etaad (25/1), Red Cossack (33/1), Live Dangerously (40/1), Della Valle (50/1)

Verdict

A good case can be made for most in this. Preference is for ZORBA THE GREEK now that he tackles a trip which his Irish form suggests will be more to his liking. A mile round Chelmsford is not the track for a horse who needs further and to be produced late. Nevertheless, two good runs there have suggested a win is imminent and a top tactician has been booked to ride. Rod Millman has a good recent record at this fixture and Isis Blue looks interesting towards the foot of the handicap form a mark which is within his range. Spinart and Capton are interesting on their handicap debuts. Both are having their first runs of the season and a bigger threat may come from the Gary Moore pair Etaad and Light of Air. The former does not have an attractive record on turf but it would be fair to say he is in better shape now than was the case on his previous starts. That history allows him to race off a lower mark than his AW rating and a good claimer adds further value. Jockey bookings suggest Light of Air is the yard's main hope. He looked a tricky ride at Kempton last time where appeared not to stay a longer trip. There should be plenty of cover in this big field and the right man is on board to coax the best from him.
  1. Zorba The Greek
  2. Light Of Air
  3. Isis Blue
