Allocated an opening handicap mark of 77 on the back of a shock 25/1 success at this track (6f maiden) in October 2016, beating Desert Sport and subsequent winner Chipping. Raced keenly that day, so this drop in trip shouldn't be troublesome, but does have an absence to overcome tonight against race ready rivals.

No surprise to see the first time cheek-pieces applied as connections seek to get that little bit extra from this gelding and get his head in front for the first time. Yet to race over the minimum trip in an eight race career, but far from disgraced behind Alkashaaf and subsequent winner Jack Flash over 6f here last month and now 2lb lower.

Off the mark at the ninth attempt in a 6f maiden fillies stakes at this track last month. That race probably didn't take much winning, but this drop in trip is far from a negative (C&D runner up in June 2016), and must surely go well back in handicap company with the first time cheek-pieces applied.

Seems to have been somewhat of a slow learner, but proved well suited by dropping back in trip to 5f on his third start when winning for this jockey at Southwell (maiden) in late January. Displayed signs of greeness, but also a willing attitude, with a mark of 62 for his handicap debut certainly more attractive that El Hombre's 77.

Forecasts

Arzaak (13/8), El Hombre (15/8), Fiery Spice (4/1), Lady Cristal (4/1)

Verdict

A tight contest despite the disappointingly small field. Fiery Spice has certainly been given a fair opportunity to supplement his Southwell gains from a reasonable opening mark of 62, but both Lady Cristal and ARZAAK have experience of this track which might well prove crucial. The former won here over 6f last time in a maiden fillies contest, and shouldn't be bothered by dropping in trip, but narrow preference is for Arzaak, who despite remaining a maiden could be suited by this small field as connections reach for the first time cheek-pieces seeking the small extra margins which can help to facilitate a first career success. 1. Arzaak 2. Lady Cristal 3. Fiery Spice
