Veteran who is a dual C&D winner and clearly retains lots of his old ability. Overall strike rate of 34% is impressive for a handicapper, and could be the one to beat once again today.
Has shown little ability on six starts so far. First start for a new yard today having moved from Patrick Chamings, but that and the first time hood will have to make all the difference.
Close second over C&D last time was his best recent effort (as well as his first time over 1m4f) and he seems to be going the right way. 2lb rise is fair for a horse who could still be improving.
Has been running well over hurdles recently but is a versatile type who has also acquitted himself well on the Flat with a couple of placed efforts. The concern would be that this trip may be short of his optimum.
Goes up 3lb for a very narrow win last time which seems a little harsh, and this trip could stretch his stamina. Best watched up against some of these.
Seems to be going the right way and has shaped as if this trip could be his optimum. Has been running some fair races recently and is 10lb lower than his handicap debut four starts ago. Solid place claims.
Put in some decent efforts on the turf last summer but has failed to fire on the all weather, with no apparent improvement for her recent switch to a new yard.
Secured his first win in Britain here two starts ago and ran another nice race when narrowly beaten off 5lb higher ten days later. That was a similar race to this, and he can go well again here off the same mark.
Second to Stand Guard here 18 days ago, and his recent performances have been much more encouraging than some of his other form. Has placed on each of his most recent three starts here and he cannot be ruled out at a track he clearly likes.
Has failed to get involved in the closing stages in six attempts so far. Handicap mark now at it's lowest yet, but he looks set to play another minor role.
Forecasts
On Fire (13/8), Tasty Ginger (11/2), Chandon Elysees (6/1), Rail Dancer (7/1), Ali Bin Nayef (8/1), Stand Guard (8/1), Iona Island (25/1), Tractive Effort (33/1), Munsarim (33/1), Jackblack (66/1)
The veteran Stand Guard showed no signs of his old age catching up with him when winning over C&D last time, but as his mark continues to rise, he's going to have to struggle sooner or later. Perhaps ON FIRE can take advantage here. The relatively lightly raced gelding ran well in defeat over C&D last month in what was his first start over 1m4f and could take all the beating if coming on for that run. Ali Bin Nayef's last three runs here have resulted in form figures of 232, and he is another danger.
1. On Fire
2. Stand Guard
3. Ali Bin Nayef
