Recorded a first success at highest level when emerging on top in a thrilling finish of Queen Anne at Royal Ascot last year. As good as ever first 2 starts this season but turned in a rare below-par effort in latest renewal of aforementioned race. Not seen to best effect in Group 2 there since.

Returned from a gelding operation better than ever to win 7f Haydock listed race in May. Best work late when 1½ lengths fifth of 18 in Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee at Royal Ascot (6f) in June and did well to overhaul leaders when landing the Lennox Stakes here on Tuesday.

Quickly made up into a very smart performer last year, bringing up a hat-trick in the inaugural running as a Group 1 of the City of York last summer. Best effort this year (still below peak form) when 1½ lengths second to Qirat in Group 3 back at York (7f) 32 days ago, outbattled.

High-class colt who enhanced superb strike rate when making all in Sandown Mile in good style. Shaped well having forced the issue a long way out when close third to Ten Bob Tony in Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. This track will play more to his strengths but the 3-y-os present a sterner test.

Course specialist who caused a huge upset in this 12 months ago when allowed too much rope. Back to winning ways when proving too strong for Never So Brave in 7f York Group 3 last month and similar form when fourth behind Lake Forest in Tuesday's Lennox Stakes. Minor role looks his best hope.

Has returned an improved performer this year, supplementing his French listed success in Diomed at Epsom. Close third in Summer Mile at Ascot since but likely to come up short at this level.

Arrives at the top of his game after wins at Epsom (Group 3) and Royal Ascot (Queen Anne), proving unexpectedly effective back at 1m on fast ground for latter success. However, may struggle to confirm the form with Opera Ballo on this easier track.

Highly impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on return. Made it 5 from 5 in St James's Palace at Royal Ascot, just holding off Gstaad but doing well in the circumstances having not been seen to best effect. The one to beat again.

Coventry/Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner at 2 yrs but proved no match for Bow Echo in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on return. However, after winning the Irish 2000 Guineas, he was only just denied by him in the St James's Palace at Royal Ascot, albeit seen to better effect.

Pair of Group 1 wins in France (7f/1m) last autumn. Respectable 1¼ lengths fourth in French 2000 Guineas on return but was essentially used to set the race up for Gstaad in St James's Palace since.

One of top 2-y-os of last season, winning 2 Group 2s (including Vintage here) and the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh when edging out Gstaad. Shaped well when second in Greenham at Newbury on reappearance but off since (reportedly had a minor setback).

Forecasts

Bow Echo (10/11), Gstaad (4/1), Opera Ballo (9/2), Lake Forest (17/2), Ten Bob Tony (16/1), Zavateri (25/1), Puerto Rico (40/1), Qirat (50/1), Seagulls Eleven (50/1), Never So Brave (80/1), Docklands (80/1), Dorset (200/1)

Verdict

BOW ECHO did very well under the circumstances when maintaining his unbeaten record at Royal Ascot and can become the first horse since Frankel to win the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes. Gstaad was unable to beat the selection despite having had the perfect set up in the St James's Palace but he still looks best of the others, with Opera Ballo the pick of the older horses.
