Debut scorer at Chester (7.6f) last summer but essentially not kicked on from that subsequently, albeit aided by a drop in class when finishing a creditable fourth of 9 in selling handicap (18/1) at Chelmsford (10f) 23 days ago. Still, others appeal more.

Maiden following 8 attempts who faced a stiff task from out of the weights and was ultimately well held when ninth of 15 in handicap at Newbury (8f, soft, 40/1) 35 days ago. This rates more suitable back up in trip

Lightly-raced maiden who made more impact than previously when placed in handicaps at Ripon/Beverley this summer. Excuses both subsequent outings, clipping heels and stumbling badly when twelfth of 15 in handicap at Leicester (10f) 11 days ago. Better showing anticipated.

Course winner. Very good second of 9 in handicap at Chelmsford City (10f, 15/2) 23 days ago, clear of rest. Expected to be bang there.

Thirteenth of 14 in handicap (50/1) at Kempton (12f) 17 days ago, left behind from 2f out. Steps back down in trip now and return to this C&D can likely help (best efforts have come here).

Thrice-raced maiden. Seventh of 8 in maiden at Lingfield (8f, AW, 200/1) 32 days ago, never going pace and always behind. Major improvement required if she's to figure from what looks a stiff opening mark on handicap debut.

Made a winning return/handicap debut at Bath (1m) in June and posted one of his better efforts since when second of 10 in handicap at this course (8.6f, 7/2) 5 days ago, running on. Not taken lightly.

Secured sole career win in a 9.8f handicap at Ripon in July and back to that sort of form when seventh of 12 in handicap at this course (8.6f) 19 days ago. Cheekpieces back on and he's no forlorn hope having dipped 1 lb below last winning mark.

Lightly-raced maiden who wasn't disgraced when fourth of 10 in handicap at Kempton (1m) 24 days ago, keeping on from 1f out. Longer trip worth exploring on that evidence and her rider takes off a handy 5 lb here.

New Bay filly who went closer than she ever has when a good second of 13 in handicap at Lingfield (10f, AW) 11 days ago, leading briefly final 50 yds and collared final strides. Nudged up 1 lb on the back of that but claims with a repeat.

Career best when off the mark at Bath (10.2f) in September and possible the step back up in trip stretched him when fourth of 9 in handicap at Brighton (11.9f, good to soft, 11/4) 18 days ago. This looks a more suitable test on tapeta debut.

Reached the frame twice last month at up to 11f but disconcerting he checked out very tamely when last of 9 in handicap at this course (12.2f, 11/4) 21 days ago. Quickly drops back in trip and certainly not without hope if dispelling that effort.

Winless following 12 attempts but returned to a more suitable grade she got back to form when a respectable third of 13 in handicap at Kempton (1m) 15 days ago. This longer trip looks worthy of exploring and another worth a second look.

Forecasts

Beta Reader (3/1), Echo Of Glory (3/1), The Dark Baron (6/1), Bona Verba (8/1), Little She (10/1), Tequila Star (10/1), Homeland (14/1), Northern Blaze (14/1), Neardown (14/1), Beachborough Girl (18/1), Magic Runner (28/1), Noss Mayo (33/1), Lady Margret (66/1)

Verdict

BETA READER produced just about his best effort to date despite things not fully going his way when just touched off at Chelmsford 23 days ago and a repeat should see Charlie Johnston's colt firmly in the mix again from a handy draw. Echo of Glory and Little She head up the dangers, while it's far too soon to be writing of Noss Mayo at this level.
