Likeable front runner who produced a career best when winning the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at York in June. Not in quite the same form since, but dropping back to 6f looks a good move (has been running out of steam late on over 7f) and he's one for the shortlist.

Smart performer who landed the 2023 renewal of this and while he's won just once from 16 subsequent starts, a reproduction of form such as his close-call in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle at the end of June would give him a serious chance.

Several solid efforts in major sprint handicaps last term, a campaign that culminated in a victory in this race 12 months ago. Produced by far his best effort of 2025 so far when a fine second under a big weight in the Portland at Doncaster (5.6f, good) and another bold show could be on the way.

Has barely put a foot wrong this year, producing any number of solid efforts in defeat prior to a game, all-the-way success in the Ayr Gold Cup (6f, soft) last month. Should give another good account, but he will need to raise his game another notch now moving into Group company.

Useful 5f winner at 2 yrs and, having struggled in a Haydock Group 2 on return in May, he has shown himself in a better light in 5f handicaps the last twice. However, a significant step forward will be needed if he's to play a leading role in the finish.

Has gone through the gears this season, kicking off with an AW novice success in March prior to a cracking run in handicaps, winning 3 (including over this C&D) and runner-up twice. Further progress when a close third in York listed race won by Elmonjed last time and this stiffer track will help.

Proved at least as good as ever when winning a listed race at Musselburgh (7f, good to firm) in June, but she hasn't scaled those heights in 3 subsequent appearances. Others make more appeal from a win point of view.

Progressive last term and raised her game again when winning handicaps at Goodwood and Hamilton on first 2 starts of present campaign. A line can be drawn through her latest effort in the Ayr Silver Cup, but she looks up against it now stepping into Group 3 company in first-time cheekpieces.

Much improved to win 6f Newmarket listed race in May, but she hasn't matched that form since and was beating a retreat at the time of being brought down in the York race won by Elmonjed last time.

Forecasts

Prince Of India (11/4), Annaf (7/2), Quinault (4/1), Elmonjed (9/2), Apollo One (11/2), Run Boy Run (15/2), Celandine (10/1), Jabaara (16/1), Lou Lou's Gift (16/1), Tiger Bay (18/1), Kullazain (22/1), Nariko (25/1), Tuco Salamanca (25/1), Alfa Kellenic (25/1)

Verdict

The combination of the drop back in trip and ease in class could be just what QUINAULT needs. Indeed, the 5-y-o was successful on his latest run in Group 3 company at York in June and has subsequently been finding 7f too stiff a test in higher-grade races. He may well have most to fear from the 2024 and 2023 winners of this race, Apollo One and Annaf respectively, while cases can also be made for last month's York listed 1-3 Elmonjed and Prince of India.
