Very smart on his day as shown when dominating the Lockinge at Newbury and Lennox Stakes at Goodwood last season. However, has failed to fire since, faring no better in first-time blinkers when down the field in City of York Stakes (7f, good to firm) 3 weeks ago.

Runner-up in the Futurity here at 2 yrs and won twice last season, confirming his juvenile form with success in the German 2000 Guineas. Met trouble in the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville (7f, good) when last seen, but will need to find more on return from 14 months off.

After 12 months off, placed for a third time at Group level when runner-up in Hackwood Stakes at Newbury (6f) in July. Well below form in the Hungerford at the same course (7f, good to firm) last time, but no surprise to see him bounce back with blinkers applied.

Likeable front runner who produced a career best when winning the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at York in June. Hasn't been in quite the same form at a higher level both subsequent outings, last of 10 in the City of York 3 weeks ago, but he could make another bold bid.

Listed winner here (6f) on final outing last year and ran well first 2 starts this season, runner-up in Criterion Stakes at York in June. Would have benefited from stronger gallop in Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh (7f, soft) last time and he's not ruled out with cheekpieces added.

Made the frame in several pattern races last year and, after 7 months off (gelded), gained a breakthrough Group 3 success in John of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock (7.2f, good) in May, edging out the admirable Kinross. Goes well fresh and he can make his presence felt.

Smart handicap performance when scoring at this course (6f) last autumn. Good second in Salisbury listed contest on return but not at the same level last 2 starts, seventh of 21 in International Stakes at Ascot (7f, good to firm) in July. Softer ground should help, though.

Made a winning seasonal/handicap debut at Naas and took his form up another notch when runner-up in Group 2 Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh in July. Below-par effort in listed race at Cork (7f, good) a month ago, but he could fare better returned to an easier surface.

Off the mark in decisive fashion at Kempton on return and placed at listed level 2 of next 3 starts. Resumed his progress when third in Hungerford Stakes at Newbury (7f, good to firm) last month and he could still have more to offer. Merits consideration.

Won 4 of 5 starts at 2 yrs, including the Middle Park and Dewhurst at Newmarket. Resumed with a very good third in 2000 Guineas and left behind a below-par effort when fourth of 9 in Prix Jean Prat at Deauville (7f, good to soft) in July. Major player back down in grade.

Made appeal on paper and overcame greenness to score readily in 11-runner maiden at Lingfield (7f, good) on debut 6 weeks ago, able to secure a good position despite having been slowly away/bumped start. Open to improvement but this is a big step up.

Forecasts

Shadow Of Light (5/4), Ten Bob Tony (11/2), Audience (6/1), Marvelman (13/2), Room Service (8/1), Quinault (16/1), King's Gamble (20/1), Zoum Zoum (25/1), East Hampton (33/1), Devil's Point (50/1), Zabeel Alkabeir (66/1)

Verdict

A dual Group 1 winner as a juvenile, SHADOW OF LIGHT has made the frame twice at the highest level this season and he is taken to resume winning ways dropped back in grade. He can see off the challenge of Ten Bob Tony, who showed improved form when landing a Group 3 at Haydock on return, while Marvelman produced a career-best effort last time and is respected.
