Had a tremendous 2021, winning 3 6f handicaps, but recent reappearance at York (first run following a wind op) lacked spark and he has a bit to prove back at this trip.

Didn't do much wrong in 2021, striking twice in 7f handicaps and also posted several solid efforts in defeat, not least when narrowly outpointed at Newmarket on latest start in September. Leading claims for last year's winning yard.

Made an excellent start on AW for current yard, landing back-to-back 7f Lingfield handicaps. However, efforts back on turf the last twice have not been at all inspiring.

Winner of sole 2-y-o start and barely broke sweat when landing a four-runner Wetherby novice (7f, good to firm) back from a lengthy absence last month. Armed with potential and makes his handicap debut off a potentially handy mark.

Made the frame on several occasions last season, including when runner-up in this corresponding race, but was below par on return at Newmarket and he's 0-16 for present connections.

Notched second success here when landing a 6f handicap in October. Stepped up on low-key reappearance display when hitting the crossbar at Ascot a fortnight ago and step back up in trip no bad thing, so he's one to consider.

Resumed winning ways at Sandown in September and positive start to current campaign when third of 10 at Musselburgh (7.2f, good to soft) last month. Mark unchanged and he should be on the premises.

Got his head back in front on penultimate start at Lingfield and by no means disgraced when fifth of 11 seven days later at Chelmsford (7f). He's not the most genuine of types, though, and current mark probably sums him up.

Forecasts

Montassib (7/4), The Attorney (7/2), Marshal Dan (5/1), Spanish Star (7/1), Dutch Decoy (10/1), Lord Rapscallion (12/1), Tintoretto (14/1), Tadreeb (18/1), Punchbowl Flyer (22/1)

Verdict

MONTASSIB missed the whole of 2021, but he looks ready to make up for lost time judged on his effortless reappearance success at Wetherby and is taken to make a winning handicap debut off what will probably turn out to be a lenient opening mark. The Attorney was most consistent last season and he is next on the list ahead of Tintoretto and Spanish Star.
