Had wind op before 50/1 winner of novice at Aintree (20f, good to soft) on hurdles bow 33 days ago, leading near finish. Next effort best excused and he remains with potential.

Placed on his second start in bumpers and showed plenty to work on when 14 lengths equal second on Sedgefield hurdle debut. Failed to build on that when only eighth at Warwick subsequently.

Well held both starts over hurdles, including at Wincanton 36 days ago. More one for handicaps on the back of this run.

Point winner who ran to a fair level in 3 starts in bumpers. Returned to former yard and has shown fairly useful form since switched to hurdling, so not one to rule out.

Fair in bumpers, but broke blood vessel when pulled up in novice hurdle at Plumpton on hurdles bow and spared a hard race back from 13 months off recently. Unlikely to feature.

Went backwards from a promising bumper debut for Sam Thomas and hasn't been seen for 22 months off, so hard to make a case for.

Fair, three-time winner at up to 2m on the Flat. Minimal promise over hurdles to this point, though, looking more of a handicap type.

Big price when down the field in minor event over C&D on hurdling debut. Looks more of a long-term project.

€58,000 3-y-o, Milan gelding. Closely related to bumper winner/fairly useful hurdler Osco Mosco. Off mark in Irish points at sixth attempt last time (Dec 19).

Forecasts

Grumpy Charley (4/7), Bumpy Johnson (9/4), Real Stone (5/2), Conceal (7/1), Sempione Park (16/1), Imperial Esprit (20/1), Restless Brian (25/1), Master Grey (50/1), Lusitanien (66/1), Just Got To Get On (66/1), Getaway Cory (125/1), Masterdream (150/1), Paddy's Return (200/1), Treacys Jim (250/1)

Verdict

Pointer-winner BUMPY JOHNSON was most impressive when making a successful start in a bumper and probably would have maintained his unbeaten record had he jumped with a touch more fluency at Hereford on his hurdling bow. With the benefit of that experience, he's fancied to find enough improvement to land this comfortably at the likely expense of Real Stone, with Grumpy Charley also considered.

  1. BUMPY JOHNSON (IRE)
  2. REAL STONE
  3. GRUMPY CHARLEY
