Winner of three of his nine races most recently by a head in a 7f handicap at Ayr last month. Handicapper reacted harshly to that narrow win, however, and he was well held at Doncaster last time.

Has won twice on Tapeta at Newcastle, and improved on that form when a staying-on fourth of 9 to Strait of Hormuz in an extended 1m handicap at Haydock last time. Can do better again, but cut back in trip not an obvious move.

Hamilton nursery winner last year, and better effort this term when 4½L fifth of 10 to Amazing News in a 7f handicap at Newmarket last time. Needs to build on that to get competitive here, but that's entirely possible.

Looked useful when winning with plenty in hand on debut at Carlisle last year, but he's not really progressed as expected, for all that the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot might have been asking too much of him last time.

Has a course win to his name, scoring over 6f here in soft ground last July, and ran very well when second to Chairmanic at Haydock two starts back. Excuses when well beaten here last time, and dangerous to dismiss.

Runner-up on return/handicap bow at Doncaster (1m) last month, and much better than the result when a fast-finishing third to Tiger Crusade over 7f there last time. Should improve further, and is clearly on a workable mark.

Much improved for reappearance/handicap debut when grittily landing a C&D handicap from Entrancing. Cheekpieces he wore then are retained, and he is considered despite a 6lb rise.

Improved to win handicaps at around this trip at Beverley and Doncaster on first two starts this summer, but went up 18lb in total, and found out by that rise here last time, albeit running respectably. Just 1lb lower for that defeat now.

Bettered winning 2-y-o form when third on his handicap bow at Kempton (1m), but couldn't justify market confidence when 3L third of 6 to Tsar at Yarmouth last time, racing too keenly for his own good. May be worth another chance dropped back to 7f.

Off the mark at the fifth attempt when winning a 1m Kempton nursery in October and went close over the same C&D on return last month. Failed to translate that form to turf at Newmarket last time, though, and others more convincing.

Highly tried on return in 1000 Guineas after winning on Newcastle debut last season, and could finish only seventh of 9 to Afraid of Nothing on handicap debut at Chelmsford last time. Tongue tie reached for now.

Both wins have come over 6f at Thirsk, most recently when winning a handicap from Iva Reflection. Had a bit to spare there, so a 6lb rise not excessive, and he shapes as though the extra furlong here will suit.

Winner in soft ground at Yarmouth on second start, and made a promising return when second over 5f at Haydock last month. Not built on that in two runs since, however, and easy enough to oppose on balance.

Didn't need to improve when shedding his maiden status at the eighth time of asking in a 7f novice at Redcar last time. This looks tougher, and he will do well to follow up.

Forecasts

Jumaira Bay (6/4), Black Caspian (6/1), Rovaniemi (13/2), Brunch (7/1), Amaysmont (12/1), National League (14/1), Commanche Falls (18/1), Impatient (20/1), Abstemious (25/1), Cruising (25/1), La Trinidad (33/1), Mischief Star (33/1), Yes Always (33/1), Tom Tulliver (100/1)

Verdict

JUMAIRA BAY was baulked at a crucial stage at Doncaster last time, and finished with a rattle for third. He may have been an unlucky loser there, and is clearly capable of winning from his current mark, so gets the nod ahead of recent C&D winner Black Caspian and Thirsk scorer Commanche Falls, both of whom are 6lb higher for those wins.

  3. Commanche Falls
