Found life tough outside of handicap company but starting to get the hang of things, including career-best 1L third at Beverley (5f) this month. Up 2lb for that effort so handicapper taking no chances, but considered.

Mark has tumbled after some poor performances and didn't show many signs of changing that run when 6L sixth over 5f at this venue a week ago. Off the same mark in this. Needs more.

Lightly-raced sort whose best effort came when runner-up at Carlisle last season. Very tame effort on seasonal return when beaten 16L in Wolverhampton handicap and must bounce back from that.

On a barren losing streak at the moment but did have some likeable form before slightly tailing off. Last seen finishing 7L eighth at Southwell (5f) in January. Off 5 months.

Exclusively ran on the all-weather for a year and came back to form the last twice, including 1L defeat at Chelmsford (6f) 12 days ago. Off the same mark in this and not to be taken lightly.

Lost his way since last winning in March 2019 and seemingly flopped with best opportunity to win since in 5f Wolverhampton handicap this month. Due to go down in the weights but makes little appeal in this.

Has taken her time to get going but now getting the hang of things, improving on previous effort when 2L third at Wolverhampton (6f) a week ago. Still may be more to come. E/W claims.

Had been improving in racing with best effort coming two starts ago, but bombed out with 15L defeat on handicap debut at Southwell (7f) in November. Not seen since and makes little appeal on all evidence.

Had been running without showing any real signs of landing a race but put marked step forward when 2L second over 5f here on latest start. Not penalised for that dangerous if replicating that form.

Busy old campaigner who has nearly brought up the century but is on a long losing run. Very little showed when 10th over 5f here last week and likely to have similarly stiff task.

Forecasts

Northern Queen (6/5), Dirchill (6/1), Poppy May (13/2), Newgate Angel (7/1), Jeans Maite (12/1), Key Choice (12/1), First Excel (20/1), Furni Factors (40/1), Tavener (50/1), Hasili Filly (50/1)

Verdict

A handicap which really lacks any previous winning substance, preference is for the Newmarket-trained POPPY MAY to make a winning return to the turf. The six-year-old has found a new lease of life on her last two starts and remains to be given a chance by the handicapper, which could prove vital in this. A similar case can be made for the likes of Newgate Angel and top-weight Northern Queen, but both need to prove they can put a string of good efforts together, while Jeans Maite remains unexposed and took a marked step forward last time, so must be considered for running into a place.
  1. Poppy May
  2. Northern Queen
  3. Jeans Maite
