Flat form in France nothing to shout about; twice runner-up over hurdles there before joining Richard Newland but failed to meet market expectations in two jumps starts last year. Has undergone wind op since last spotted; may do better.

Not unfancied for AW Bumper at Newcastle in January and shaped as if he'd improve for it; 40-1 following month at Doncaster (2m½f, soft) and unable to get in contention from rear. First start in this code.

Fifth foal out of a dam, 7f selling winner. Trailed home last of four at Wolverhampton over 1m4f, beaten 21L, on his belated debut in November. Hard to fancy on that evidence.

Filly has winners in the family but sent off three-figure prices in maidens at Wolverhampton (1m½f/1m1½f) five months apart and beaten 15L or more both times. Hard to recommend on turf bow.

Gelding by Sea The Stars cost 70,000 gns; shaped with some promise in novice company at Chelmsford and Lingfield (both 1m2f) late last year; could be more to offer on return/turf bow.

Australia gelding, never made the racetrack for Aidan O'Brien and beaten out of sight on debut this month at Newcastle (1m2f, AW; 66-1); watching brief for now.

Cost £850,000 as a yearling, related to some smart sorts including the top-class Rip Van Winkle; faded rather tamely on debut at Kempton (1m4f, AW; 10-1) this month but type to do better before long.

Showed some promise when he was third of six on his opening outing at Haydock (1m) back in August. Made good progress in the second half of the race. Expect to see him improve this time up in trip if stripping fir from the layoff.

Camelot half-sister to 1¼m winner Bethany. Dam unraced half-sister to smart 1½m-2m winner Rajik; commands respect on debut for top yard in the winnable heat.

Mastercraftsman filly, half-sister to two winners. 200-1 poke in Newcastle maiden (1m2f, AW) this month won by Ribblesdale scorer Frankly Darling and beaten 30L in ninth. Nothing of that ilk in here but chunk of improvement needed anyway.

Forecasts

A Star Above (5/6), Stockbridge Tap (4/1), Retrospect (9/2), Margaret Dumont (17/2), Boltissime (14/1), Eternal Romantic (25/1), Kangaroo Point (66/1), Yer Tekkin Mick (80/1), Wrightia (150/1), Avis Bay (150/1), Champagne Castle (200/1)

Verdict

A Star Above sets the standard from those that have run with her Lingfield third in December. She should have more to offer going up in distance. The benchmark isn't high though and the Mark Johnston-trained debutante MARGARET DUMONT, a filly by Camelot, could be another wining newcomer for the Middleham handler. Retrospect, William Haggas' 850,000 gns son of Frankel, should also leave his debut run well behind.
  1. Margaret Dumont
  2. A Star Above
  3. Retrospect
