Back-to-back winner at this level during the summer of 2019 but form tailed off since including two poor efforts over C&D. Well-beaten in the Cambridgeshire when last seen and a bit to ask of in this.

In good form on the flat last summer, culminating with stylish victory in 1m2f Nottingham handicap in August. Seen once over hurdles since but goes well fresh. Leading chance.

Neck second over C&D last summer but form went wayward after that. Struggled on seasonal return when 10L sixth at Haydock (1m) and may need a further drop in the handicap to be competitive.

Was a consistent sort for this yard over the winter period, but returned from small break with 17L defeat at Newcastle (1m2f) this month. Is better than that and no shock if he bounces back.

One-time winner last season who became in and out of sorts, but ended with modest 5L defeat in 1m4f Catterick handicap in October. Not seen since and has had subsequent wind operation.

Failed to really go on since his Haydock victory last summer and didn't show much sign of a revival when 7L eighth at Newcastle (1m) earlier this month. 1lb off his last winning mark so has place claims.

Awake My Soul14
Age: 11|  Weight: 9-2| J: P Mathers| T: T P Tate| OR:  81| CD
5/1
Veteran handicapper who is on a consistent losing run. Good second at Newmarket (1m2f) in November and not disgraced in fourth on seasonal return at Newcastle (1m2f). Place claims if replicating that.

Some good levels of form at much higher level last season and shaped as if another drop in the weights could suit at Newcastle last time (1m2f). 5lb below last winning mark and of significant interest.

Illustrissime14
Age: 7|  Weight: 9-1| J: Jason Hart| T: M Walford| OR:  80
14/1
Disappointing on final flat start and subsequent hurdles efforts at the end of last season, but put up good performance when 2L fourth at Newcastle (1m2f) this month. Off the same mark and makes each-way appeal.

Becoming consistent in this company recently with four placed efforts, including 2L third at Chelmsford (1m2f) twelve days ago. Not penalised for that and hails from powerful yard. Leading chance.

Benadalid14
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-1| J: P Mulrennan| T: C W Fairhurst| OR:  80| BF| CD
9/1
Winner over 1m4f here in 2018 and mixed bag of form since. Looked in need of the run when 5L ninth in 1m2f Newcastle handicap last time and looks vulnerable to more progressive types.

Forecasts

Hats Off To Larry (5/1), Awake My Soul (5/1), Society Red (5/1), Mikmak (7/1), Benadalid (9/1), Mutamaded (9/1), Amjaady (9/1), Illustrissime (14/1), Gulf Of Poets (14/1), Mulligatawny (16/1), Jus Pires (22/1)

Verdict

A race which could see an improver go on to land similar races, preference is for SOCIETY RED to return to winning ways. He has strong form in leading handicaps previously and will appreciate the significant drop in the weights. He is well-below his last winning level and Richard Fahey looks to have found a solid opportunity to get back to winning ways. Amjaady possesses the most progressive profile in the contest but even with the application of headgear has become a slightly frustrating sort, while the likes of Illustrissime and the veteran Awake My Soul are just a handful of horses who can go on from the comeback starts and have each-way claims.
  1. Society Red
  2. Amjaady
  3. Illustrissime
