Was a triple winner of fillies' sprint handicaps in 2018 on AW/good to firm on turf. Best of those was when 1lb lower than today at Doncaster. Was reduced to just one one run last season. Can go well fresh, so market check advised.

Multiple Tapeta winner over 5f/6f. 5lb higher than her highest winning mark going into this, and her turf record suggests that she will need significant improvement to come home in front here.

Triple 5f winner on fast ground and considering he won from 6lb higher last season, he returns from a break on a very handy mark. However, he has never been close to his best on slow ground, which is a big concern.

Sole win came in a soft ground Ripon maiden (6f) almost a year ago to the day. Unable to better that in four subsequent handicaps. Since gelded and may now be able to kick on again. Bit to prove but not written off.

Prolific winner over the minimum trip, including on soft ground. Back on the same mark as his most recent success at Beverley last September. Was off the boil on AW in February, but could be a different proposition here.

Without a win for almost three years and now on a 24-race losing run. Proved he is still competitive from this mark on more than one occasion last season, but needs to raise the bar to end that losing streak.

12-race maiden, four of them on turf, where he made the frame for the only time at Beverley (5f, good) 13-months ago. Has subsequently been consistent in defeat on AW. Not ruled out, but clearly also vulnerable.

Six-time 5f winner on good/fast ground. Back on a handy mark, but has already had several chances and been unable to take any. Slower ground is also a concern.

Won two of his first five starts as a juvenile, the turf success being on good to firm. Those were for Mark Johnston, and after a good start for this trainer (6f) he was below par in two more runs. Others make more appeal.

Enjoyed a good 2019, with an AW win and then two on turf, one over C&D (good to firm). Form then tailed off. Since had wind surgery and returns from a break still 3lb higher than his last win, so needs to find more.

3-49 on turf, which doesn't inspire great confidence, although one of those was over C&D last year (good to soft) from today's mark and was followed up at Catterick from 3lb higher. Can't rule him out on that basis, though yet to win when fresh.

Prolific winner, though all on good ground or faster, so conditions don't appear to be ideal for him. Has had wind surgery since last seen in September, and has never won when fresh, so there's a fair bit for him to prove.

Multiple sprint winner on good ground or slower, including here over 6f in 2016. Has shown he retains some ability in three starts for this trainer, and can't be written off despite not yet having won after a break.

Age: 6|  Weight: 9-1| J: Phil Dennis| T: D C Griffiths| OR:  64| D

Both his wins have been on good or fast ground, although he has shown he handles good to soft. Well below his best in two runs since joining this trainer and looks best watched until there are signs of a revival.

Forecasts

Abate (5/2), Mythical Spirit (4/1), Excessable (8/1), Indian Sounds (10/1), Kyllachy Warrior (12/1), Van Gerwen (14/1), Nibras Again (14/1), Gamesome (14/1), Suwaan (18/1), Klopp (20/1), Desert Ace (22/1), The Defiant (25/1), Bashiba (33/1), Leo Minor (40/1)

Verdict

A typically tricky Thirsk dash is in prospect. Paul Midgley saddles almost half the field, so in terms of numbers it would be no surprise to see him provide the winner, although closer scrutiny of his team suggests that most of them might need this. Of the sextet, Van Gerwen can perhaps have a case made, as can Gamesome, though DESERT ACE is taken to bounce right back to form now returning to turf. Mythical Spirit and Kyllachy Warrior are others of interest.
  1. Desert Ace
  2. Gamesome
  3. Kyllachy Warrior
