Won three-times on the AW (1m3f-1m4½f) for Roger Charlton, but is yet to strike on turf (0-7 Flat, 0-5 hurdles); has made his way from Phil Kirby to Dan Skelton (also saddles Denmead) in the 369 days since his last racecourse visit.

Versatile stayer (6-26) who possesses ability, yet sometimes doesn't appear to be the most enthusiastic; runner-up in a Class 2 handicap at Goodwood (2m4½f, good) last July; finished well down the field in the 2019 Cesarewitch (2m2f, soft).

Runner-up in the Edinburgh Cup at Musselburgh (2m, good to firm) before a productive stint on the AW at Newcastle; remains firmly on the upgrade (from a career high mark); certain to be up there forcing the pace from the outset.

Sole win was for Jonathan Portman at Lingfield (1m) in early 2018; reasonably consistent since and evidently stays 2m+; runner-up for current connections over hurdles at Carlisle (2m3f+, soft) in January; first start since wind surgery.

Inconsistent for Ed Walker, but is a useful horse when on-song; wore down Landa Beach in a blanket finish at Haydock (1m6f, soft) last September; has since moved on for 70,000gns; makes his stable debut sporting a tongue-tie post wind surgery.

Burst a blood vessel on his second start over fences (won on Wincanton debut); relished the switch to the Flat when literally hacking up on the Fibresand at Southwell (2m½f); potentially leniently treated despite a 12lb weights rise; player.

18/1
Ex-Jamie Osborne; returned from a lengthy absence to score (on stable debut) on the Polytrack at Kempton (1m4f) in November; has blown somewhat hot and cold since, so it's fairly difficult to know what to expect; stablemate of Mandalayan.

Age: 5|  Weight: 8-9| J: J Mitchell| T: H Morrison| OR:  73| DWS
14/1
500,000gns yearling who has registered just one win in 14 career starts (over an extended 2m at Wolverhampton); runner-up on stable/hurdles debut at Ludlow before turning in a very laboured effort next time; tongue-tied post wind surgery; risky.

Verdict

It wouldn't be Pontefract without a marathon contest for the stayers, and this race has the look and feel of a National Hunt contest with the likes of Warren Greatrex (x2), Dan Skelton (x2), Olly Murphy and Paul Nicholls listed in the trainers column. Three of those declared (Mandalayan, Ginistrelli and Moon Of Baroda) are reappearing post wind surgery while the autumn York scorer Sassie is newly tongue-tied so it's prudent to adopt a cautious approach. Nevertheless, it is the Paul Nicholls-trained/Megan Nicholls-ridden OLEG who makes most appeal. He hacked up on the Fibresand at Southwell in March, and it's possible the 12lb weights rise can be overcome.
