Winner of the Class 2 Scottish Sprint Cup at Musselburgh (5f, good) in April; the subsequent weights rise made for a tricky summer handicapping (regularly performed well); blinkers and eye-shields worn on AW return; chance.
Looked to have an exciting future when winning impressively on debut (form solid) at Yarmouth (6f, good to firm) last September; somewhat disappointing since - turned over at odds of 11-10f at Newcastle latest; risky on handicap debut.
Runner-up to Monday's Musselburgh winner Tarboosh in a 5f conditions stakes at Beverley (soft) on his penultimate start; is trained locally by Scott Dixon (saddles three) so will have nothing to fear from this unique racing surface; visor applied.
Bids for the hat-trick following back-to-back wins at Windsor (5f, good/good to firm); sits a further 2lb higher than for his latest success (44 days ago); 2-12 on the AW previously - both wins over 7f on Tapeta at Wolverhampton.
Front-runner; won four on the bounce on turf (all over 5f) for Ivan Furtado in 2018; hasn't beaten a single rival in two starts this season; has the required ability but also plenty of questions to be answered on Fibresand debut.
Simply adores Southwell, adding a 13th course win last month when scrambling home from Mininggold and Honey Gg; has previous C&D form with Saaheq (April 2018) which would strongly imply that he'll struggle from this revised mark.
Has had a spell in the doldrums since winning for Michael Wigham at Newcastle (6f) in early January; showing signs of getting back on the right track for Robyn Brisland (is expected to saddle plenty of winners here this winter) of late.
Backpedalled after winning for Richard Fahey at Hamilton (6f, good to firm) in May; mixed fortunes on this surface previously - beat Samovar by ¾L in an otherwise weak C&D novice in January; first start for Olly Williams (cost £10,000).
One of three declared runners for Scott Dixon; carries a 5lb penalty for last week's C&D win (beat Mininggold by a neck); generally can be relied upon to run his usual solid race at this track but should find others stronger tonight.
Has won three-times over C&D since last December; narrowly beaten by the Scott Dixon-trained duo Crosse Fire and Samovar on her last couple of starts; is inching up the weights ever so steadily; remains a place possible.
Two of his three AW wins have come over C&D, the most recent when beating Fair Alibi by ½L in a five-runner Class 5 handicap in March; finished 2½L fourth to the reopposing Samovar and Mininggold here last week; cheekpieces now applied.
Forecasts
Saaheq (10/3), Magic J (4/1), Dark Shot (11/2), Nick Vedder (7/1), Mininggold (15/2), Harry Hurricane (10/1), Samovar (12/1), Sandridge Lad (12/1), Crosse Fire (16/1), Laith Alareen (50/1), Cool Spirit (50/1)
A plethora of C&D form to dissect involving Crosse Fire, Samovar, Mininiggold and Sandridge Lad. Scott Dixon is responsible for two of those aforementioned horses, along with the newly visored Dark Shot while Robyn Brisland (Nick Vedder) also reported having a strong hand for Southwell after saddling a winner here last week. Meanwhile, the handicap debutant Magic J could feasibly strip fitter for a recent run at Newcastle, although it's surely debatable if he'll ever fulfil the raw promise shown as a juvenile. Therefore, for small stakes the classy top-weight SAAHEQ gets a tentative nod on his return to Fibresand for The Horse Watchers.
- Saaheq
- Mininggold
- Nick Vedder
