Has not managed to get his nose in front this season, and this is a very tough race to break that sort of duck Acts on soft, but probably wants it faster than this to be at his best.

Dual Listed winner at two. Relishes plenty of ease in the ground, but just hasn't quite looked the same horse this season. Headgear now tried, and if that can galvanise him, he could still make an impact here.

C&D winner who has two wins to his name this season and has performed well in these types of races, including in the Stewards' Cup recently. Goes on soft ground. Draw not ideal, but otherwise a serious player.

Was going well on AW earlier in the year, but recent efforts on turf less inspiring. Back on a handy mark, and handles good to soft, but others make greater appeal.

Has run well over C&D and looks to have retained his ability this year, with a series of very competitive efforts. Was a shade below par behind Dakota Gold last time, but conditions fine, well drawn, and a contender.

Probably at his best on AW surfaces, but did see off a big field over 6f at York (good to firm) in June. Couldn't back that up on soft next time, but step back in right direction when sixth in Stewards' Cup two weeks ago. More needed, however.

Pulled away his chance several times last season, but ran well in this race behind Gunmetal from a low draw, and showed a good attitude to score on soft at York last time (6f). Up 3lb, but is a player from a good draw.

Two years since he won the Stewards' Cup from 7lb higher. Returned from a break at Ascot last week with a run that suggested he would come on for it, but drawn down the middle, which is not ideal, and enough reasons to take him on.

C&D winner when with John Quinn, and romped home back here on his stable debut when he dismissed a big field. Lost his race at the start at Ascot last time, and not well drawn here, but not written off.

Made all to see off a small field at Goodwood in June, when 6lb lower, and went on to produce a career-best in Listed company at Salisbury on his next start. Goes well on soft ground, and he enters calculations.

Good effort over C&D in June, and again went well at Windsor when third last month. Back on a handy mark, but has to overcome a flat performance back at Windsor last time.

Without success since his debut. Relishes some cut underfoot, but they might be going a shade quick for him over this trip.

Finished placed in Listed company when with Roger Varian two years ago, but couldn't go on from there for Clive Cox last season. Scored over C&D recently, and from 3lb higher, he has a squeak from a good draw.

Scored from 5lb lower at Thirsk in May, and has been consistent since. Needs to pull out more to win a race like this, but certainly has each-way claims.

Multiple winner last year, including on good to soft. Made all to win at Windsor in May. Needs to find some improvement to win this., but has a good drawn and she is one to consider.

Arrives in good form, having won two of his last four. Played late to score at Windsor recently, and has gone up just 1lb for that. Best on fast ground so far. New headgear on, and has a rail draw, but still more needed.

Brought to an end a lengthy turf drought when scoring in the Stewards' Cup consolation event a fortnight ago. Up 2lb for that, but his record suggests that a follow-up success would be a bit of a surprise.

Forecasts

Dakota Gold (5/1), Great Prospector (6/1), Lahore (7/1), Lake Volta (7/1), Summerghand (15/2), Gunmetal (10/1), Muscika (14/1), Richenza (14/1), Belated Breath (14/1), Vintage Brut (16/1), Venturous (16/1), Citron Major (18/1), Staxton (18/1), Reputation (18/1), Ice Age (20/1), Intisaab (20/1), Poyle Vinnie (25/1), George Bowen (28/1), Gulliver (28/1), Lancelot Du Lac (33/1)

Verdict

A cracking handicap in prospect. Gunmetal is entitled to make short-lists again, while Dakota Gold has what appears to be a more attractive draw and looks a serious contender. However, LAKE VOLTA is a battle-hardened individual with good course form, and he won't mind these conditions, so he is the suggestion. Staxton, Richenza, Belated Breath and Reputation are others form whom cases can be made.
  1. Lake Volta
  2. Dakota Gold
  3. Staxton
