Dual winner at York (5f) and Pontefract (6f) who flew too high in Group 2 company last time; will appreciate the ease in grade. Does have the full penalty to carry though and that will make life tough against some other useful sorts.
Both wins have come over 5f at Musselburgh (first on debut); has failed twice in Listed company over the minimum trip. Unlucky not to win last time on nursery debut (failed to get the run of the race) last time; first try at 6f, still of interest.
Went one better than on his debut when taking a small-field 6f Pontefract minor event prior to failing in the Coventry Stakes (ridden too aggressively). Below form last time behind Hurstwood (last of three); better expected off a break.
Useful sort, has already won twice this year over 6f (first time on debut); had plenty of experience to call on when taking a York novice. Below form last time over 7f at Ascot (unsuited by the way the race played out); favoured by the weights here.
Least experienced of this quintet who ran in a respectable manner last time without really progressing from what was a debut that held some promise. Paid the price for chasing an easy winner; may be worth a try over further.
Forecasts
Oh Purple Reign (10/11), Monoski (5/2), Hurstwood (15/2), Bill Neigh (8/1), Mr Jones And Me (14/1)
None of this quintet have run here before and a few of them are taking an ease in grade having chanced their arm in Group company in the past few outings. Hurstwood was outclassed in the Group 2 July Stakes last time having defeated MONOSKI the time before at Pontefract in a small-field conditions event but it may well be that Mark Johnston’s charge was suffering from his Group 2 Coventry Stakes exertions then and at the weights can reverse the form. Oh Purple Reign has prior to his last run been an ultra-consistent sort and he could make his weight advantage count back at 6f. Dual 5f Musselburgh winner Bill Neigh can’t be ignored and adds depth to an intriguing event.
- Monoski
- Oh Purple Reign
