Without a win since May 2017 (6f, Ascot) but there's no doubting that on his day he's a very talented sprint handicapper; struggling for form so far in 2019 (eased 9lb since April); stablemate of Roundhay Park.
Finished strongly after a tardy start to get up close home at Leicester in April (6f, good to firm); that form looks solid with the likes of Firmdecisions (second), Big Lachie (fourth) and A Sure Welcome (fifth) all winning since; 7lb higher.
Has never won beyond 5f, yet did run some very creditable races in defeat over this trip last summer (and appears well handicapped off a mark of 83); finished 3½L third to Cartmell Cleave (Gabrial The Devil second) at Doncaster (6f) last week.
Most effective on the AW at Newcastle (6f-1m) but is also a capable horse on turf as he demonstrated over 7f during the summer of 2018; is likely to find one or two better handicapped.
Evidently is nowhere near the force of old; continues to tumble in the weights, now a full 18lb lower than when winning a 6f Class 2 Kempton handicap for Roger Varian in November 2017; very difficult to fancy.
Sits 5lb higher than when scoring at Hamilton (6f, good) last August; ideally prefers some cut underfoot but is also adept at dealing with a sound surface; beaten 1½L by Cartmell Cleave (Roundhay Park third) at Doncaster (6f) last week.
Has brought his winter AW improvement back to turf, exploiting a lenient mark in the process; kept on strongly when beating Prestbury Park by 2L at Doncaster (6f) in May; rates as a major player off a 6lb higher mark.
A three-time 7f winner, including at this track in June 2018 (dead-heat); has slackened off fractionally since making a promising start to the turf season (6f-7f); the handicapper is giving him every chance; stablemate of Buccaneers Vault.
Hasn't won on turf for 13 months, although did break his AW duck at Newcastle (6f) last October; like his stablemate Saluti has blown rather hot and cold so far in 2019; on a workable mark if bouncing back to form.
With Brian Meehan as a juvenile; sold for 18,000gns in October 2018 not long after finishing a short-head second to She Can Boogie in a 5f Nottingham nursery; made his debut for Phil Makin at Newcastle last week (fifth of six).
Cut a little slack by the handicapper in recent weeks and hit the frame on heavy ground over C&D latest (beaten 1½L by Somewhere Secret); handles most conditions but others make more appeal in this race.
Veteran C&D winner who won't be troubled by the conditions; has slipped down the weights since late 2018 (some 14lb or so); a mere hint of a revival when finishing 5¼L fifth of 12 at Goodwood (6f, soft) last month.
Forecasts
Gabrial The Devil (11/4), Equiano Springs (11/4), Roundhay Park (4/1), Saluti (10/1), Last Page (12/1), Nick Vedder (12/1), Normandy Barriere (14/1), Madrinho (18/1), Buccaneers Vault (18/1), Double Up (25/1), Almurr (28/1), Englishman (33/1)
Both Gabrial The Devil and Roundhay Park must enter the equation after finishing on the premises under similar conditions at Doncaster last week, with the latter almost certain to take full advantage of a very fair handicap mark sooner rather than later. David Loughnane has kept his powder dry (so to speak) with Last Page since his 4yo gelding was a decisive winner of a 6f Leicester handicap (form solid) in April, so he's of definite interest from a 7lb higher mark. However, the horse to stick with is the thriving EQUIANO SPRINGS who shows no signs of slacking off on turf following a productive winter on the AW at Newcastle.
- Equiano Springs
- Last Page
