All three British wins have been at Ripon over 1m2f. Acts on good or slower. On a handy mark and went close when 1lb lower at York on penultimate start. Respected.

Chelmsford novice winner (1m5½f, AW) last August. Went close when 1lb lower at Redcar on his final start of last season (1m6f, soft; first-time hood); made a decent reappearance at Kempton recently. Not ruled out.

Won this two years ago when 1lb higher (good to soft). Acts on any ground. Has slipped to a handy mark and very much entitled to consideration from a good draw, despite latest run.

Won back-to-back races this time last year at Chester (1m4½f) and Ripon (1m4f, good), the latter when 1lb higher. Not quite as good since, but can't rule him out.

Won three times last year over 1m4f, on good or soft ground. Remains 1lb higher than the best of those and although his latest run was a step back in the right direction, he looks up against it.

Scored over 1m4f at Pontefract (good to firm) last season, when 4lb lower. Went close next time when 1lb higher. Has the ability to get heavily involved but he is not easy to catch right.

Without a turf win since 2015, but three Newcastle AW wins since then, two over 1m4½f. Last of those came from today's mark, but form has dipped since. Bit to prove.

Windsor novice win (1m, good to firm) for Hugo Palmer last year remains his only one. Was beaten just 1L from today's mark on his stable/seasonal debut at Doncaster in March. Has each-way claims based on that an his penultimate run.

Enjoying a really good spell and has won three of his last five in the past two months, on fast or soft going. Up 3lb for the most recent of those at Chester and enters calculations.

Last win came in Listed company at York in 2015, but now 29lb lower after a 22-race losing run. Drops another 3lb after an 8L defeat back at York on his return to this stable recently. Hard to fancy at present.

Both Flat wins came on firm ground, though he did win a hurdle on good. Has been in good form in the other code just lately and looks an each-way player back in this code with a 1lb drop.

Ended a 12-race losing run with a third career success last time, getting the better of a tight tussle in a 0-75 (1m3f, good to soft). Hard to argue with a 2lb rise for that, but recent inconsistencies a concern.

Bath winner (1m2f, good to firm) last October, when 5lb lower and with Amanda Perrett. Finished 1L behind Groveman over hurdles at Catterick in January, and not seen since revisiting that venue to be second again in February. Poor draw.

Won here (1m) as a novice. Acts on most ground. Carries 5lb penalty here after scoring at Ripon (1m4f, soft) last time. Entitled to plenty of respect, though has yet to win back-to-back races.

0-15 so far and neither John Oxx nor Dan Skelton has managed to eek a win out of him. Changed hands privately since last run and this trainer has a good record with others' cast-offs, so a market check looks prudent.

Second three times on the Flat for Richard Fahey before joining this trainer last year. Won a Musselburgh maiden hurdle (good to soft) in March. Has run with credit in his last two starts back on the Flat. Remains of interest in first time headgear.

Forecasts

Where's Jeff (5/1), Appointed (6/1), Volcanic Sky (7/1), Rake's Progress (15/2), Groveman (8/1), Chingachgook (10/1), Employer (11/1), Mutamaded (16/1), Benadalid (16/1), Armandihan (18/1), Regular Income (18/1), Dance King (20/1), Top Notch Tonto (33/1), Multellie (33/1), Sea Of Mystery (33/1), Desert Ruler (40/1), Dagian (50/1)

Verdict

A wide open renewal of one of the day's big races. Chingachgook makes each-way appeal on recent form, while Appointed is entitled to consideration, but her record of being unable to back up a win is offputting. Where's Jeff should be thereabouts again, along with Groveman, while Mutamaded, Volcanic Sky and Benadalid are others of interest. However, DANCE KING won this two years ago and from this mark, he can make it three in a row in the contest for trainer Tim Easterby.
  1. Dance King
  2. Where's Jeff
  3. Chingachgook
