Chasing newcomer who also makes his GB/stable debut having shaped well in his first handicap hurdle last time (first-time cheekpieces; jumped without fluency). Headgear discarded; improvement needed off a 10lb higher mark than last time.

May well have had his problems when with Tom George despite winning a maiden hurdle for that team. Little impact since switching to fences though for his former and present yards; always behind last time; now tried in first-time headgear.

Billy Hicksb,t21
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-11| J: David England| T: S Drinkwater| OR:  96
5/1
Won consecutive hurdles in soft conditions back in 2017; finally showed some worthwhile if modest form last time wearing today's headgear for the first time (finished runner-up). Should appreciate this trip; respected on that run at this level.

Huge absence to overcome making his chasing/stable debut having been well held on all his hurdles runs. Has been a fairly useful Flat performer on his day; would be some training performance to make him competitive in this.

Ride On Timet1393
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-5| J: Alan Johns| T: Tim Vaughan| OR:  90
10/1
Not seen out under Rules since 2016 (pulled up in a Kempton handicap hurdle) he now returns from some time between the flags (failed to complete on his last four starts in that sphere. Starts life with a new yard; not one to enthuse over.
6

Hurricane Vic27
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-1| J: Philip Armson(7)| T: R J Armson| OR:  86
16/1
Would have claims off this mark on the best of his form when with Alan King but he's failed to fire of late; pulled up in a hunter chase last time at Southwell. Sets out for a new yard but comes obvious risks attached despite a falling mark.

Boutan17
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-11| J: P J Brennan| T: G Harris| OR:  82
5/1
Remains a maiden over hurdles despite running some sound enough races in that sphere (has won on the Flat); she now switches to fences for the first time. Ran soundly last time (only beaten by a less-exposed pair); one to note in this discipline.
8

Camaplu29
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-10| J: Brendan Powell| T: D G Bridgwater| OR:  81
8/1
Stepped forward slightly over hurdles having been switched to handicaps she hasn't been disgraced in four starts since returning from a fair absence. Now goes chasing for the first time; a repetition of her form over timber would see her go close.
9
Horse silk
Bisoubisoup,t31
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-8| J: Kevin Jones(3)| T: Mrs S J Humphrey| OR:  79
12/1
Two hurdles wins to her name with that brace of successes coming at Fakenham but has looked a hard/difficult ride since the last victory (including on chase debut). Ran well below form over hurdles last time; not hard to prefer others in this.

Horse silk
Mr Landot16
Age: 10|  Weight: 10-6| J: David Noonan| T: J Farrelly| OR:  77
9/1
Front-running type over hurdles who hasn't won for a while but has on occasions shown that he's still capable of scoring off lowly marks. Two recent chasing starts have been modest enough but they give him place claims here in a low-grade affair.
11
Horse silk
Thomas Crown36
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-2| J: J E Moore| T: D Faulkner| OR:  73
6/1
Would be of little interest on his Flat/hurdles form but he has been placed and won in the PTP sphere of late. Now returns to chasing with that confidence booster behind him off a career-low mark; note any market interest.
12
Horse silk
Starlit Night51
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-0| J: Page Fuller(3)| T: C J Down| OR:  65| C
14/1
Likely to have needed the run returning from a eight-month absence over hurdles (well out of the handicap) at Newton Abbot after a wind op. 6lb out of the weights here for her chase debut she continues to make limited appeal.

Forecasts

Billy Hicks (5/1), Game Line (5/1), Boutan (5/1), Thomas Crown (6/1), Camaplu (8/1), Mr Lando (9/1), Ride On Time (10/1), Bisoubisou (12/1), Starlit Night (14/1), Hurricane Vic (16/1), Super Sid (20/1), Rising Breeze (50/1)

Verdict

Just a low-grade contest but competitive nonetheless with one or two looking to have chances in this sphere and off their current marks. BOUTAN has yet to win over obstacles but she ran into two well-handicapped sorts at Worcester last time and a good round of jumping would see her go close off this mark. Likewise Camaplu has shown a little more over hurdles of late and she could also show more in this sphere. Thomas Crown lurks on a dangerous mark now if his recent point-to-point form is any indication of a return to form with Billy Hicks looking as though this 2m5f will be the ideal trip for him now, he’s respected along with Mr Lando one of the likely pace setters in this.
  1. Boutan
  2. Billy Hicks
  3. Thomas Crown
