Not involved on both starts this season. Yard's horses are starting to run much more encouragingly now though, and this is his fist run in a Class 5 since he won a handicap at Yarmouth in October 2017. 6lb above that mark.
Dropped in the weights by the handicapper after finishing in midfield at Newmarket (6f; good to firm) last time when things didn't go to plan. Subsequently 2lb below last winning mark and could sneak a place if everything falls right.
Makes seasonal return today after a string of respectable efforts on the AW at both Newcastle and Southwell towards the end of 2018. Ran a particularly eye-catching race when last seen on turf when second at York (7f; good to soft). Interesting.
Another one who is inconsistent in this field, and she was rather flat on her reappearance at Windsor (6f; good). That was a rather unconvincing return on turf too and she has it all to prove. Yard are out of form too.
Tends to run his best races in slower conditions, as shown when failing to back up Nottingham win when ninth of 11 at Thirsk (6f; good) last time. Has the talented Cieren Fallon onboard who offsets 7lb and he shouldn't be overlooked.
Improve upon his Thirsk showing two starts ago when finishing third at Carlisle (6f; good to firm). Only beaten just under a length then and that run came in a higher grade. Inconsistent but has a chance if turning up in similar form.
Running well on the AW throughout the winter. Latest 10th of 10 at Brighton (7f; good to firm) when having first run on turf this year does not tell the whole story (hampered at a crucial stage of the race and didn't recover).
Enjoyed a decent campaign last year, but below-par on both starts this term. Slight improvement on most recent run when seventh of 11 at Thirsk (6f; good). Just a bit more required off the back of that and he is only 1lb above last winning mark.
Down to his last winning mark which came in July last year, but hard to have any faith in him. Desperately struggling for form at present and turned in worst run for some time recently when tenth of 12 at Wolverhampton (7f; standard).
Posted best effort on grass for some time when third at Beverley (7f; good to soft). Has to reproduce that level of form which is easier said than done with this inconsistent type, but he would be thereabouts if doing so.
AW profile more convincing than what he has achieved on turf. Didn't run as the market suggested when sent off the 7/2F at Thirsk (6f; good to soft) last time and winless run is now beginning to mount up.
Forecasts
Somewhere Secret (5/1), Rasheeq (5/1), Shortbackandsides (7/1), Lucky Lodge (7/1), Redrosezorro (7/1), Champagne Bob (7/1), Madrinho (8/1), Pickett's Charge (10/1), Sir Ottoman (12/1), Delilah Park (14/1), Mutafarrid (33/1)
A tricky looking sprint handicap with plenty of these being inconsistent, out of form, or both. Sir Ottoman should be given another chance after his run at Brighton was practically a non-event after he suffered trouble in running. He had previously been in fabulous form on the AW, and should be very competitive if staying clear of trouble. Mutafarrid is lightly raced in comparison to a few of these and the change in grade/trip could see him produce a much improved effort. A tentative vote is given to SHORTBACKANDSIDES though, who improved on his first start of the season when not disgraced recently and a similar slice of improvement could see him go close.
- Shortbackandsides
- Sir Ottoman
- Mutafarrid
