Finished down the field in the Britannia Stakes (1m) at Royal Ascot in June 2018 and off the track since; looked to be a promising type prior (three-time 7f winner); market support would offer plenty of encouragement; stablemate of War Glory.

Stablemate of Qaysar; a three-time AW winner (7f-1m), including as recently as September 2018 (Kempton); remains a maiden on turf (0-15) but has run reasonably well on various occasions over 1m on quick ground.

Has served his current handler Les Eyre well, winning three-times in 2018 (at or around 1m) since being purchased for 65,000gns; his back-end Redcar second was franked by the winner on Monday; posted an encouraging return at Doncaster 11-days ago.

5/2
Very lightly-raced 150,000gns yearling; an easy winner of both starts (including on handicap debut) since finishing a head second to Stradivarius in a 1m Newcastle maiden in November 2016; of obvious interest despite the 489-day absence.

Reliable and progressive throughout the course of 2018; 5lb higher than when winning at Sandown (1m, good to soft) in August; solid third to Primero at Chelmsford (1m2f) in November; interesting contender if he can get to the lead.

Rose a combined total of 14lb in the weights for a hat-trick of wins (Redcar (x2) and Pontefract) in mid to late 2018; trip and ground conditions are in his favour, but he faces a tough task in making all against these rivals.

French Listed winner (1m, soft) - also effective on quick ground; yet to make his mark since joining David O'Meara for €140,000 in July 2018; still early days on these shores.

Kaeso186
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-0| J: T Eaves| T: N Tinkler| OR:  88| D
14/1
6-17 on turf; effective on good/good to soft ground; plenty high enough in the weights nowadays, although did manage to cling on from today's rival Mickey in an ultra-game manner to justify favouritism at Chester (7½f, good) in August 2018.

Frankel gelding; 20/1 winner of a 7f novice at Salisbury (good to soft) in August 2018 and on the premises (third) on handicap debut at York (1m2f) the following month; still relatively unexposed.

Consistent on the AW throughout the winter, arguably most effective over the straight mile at Newcastle; 5lb above his last winning mark and 0-18 on turf; expected to struggle against these rivals.

Mickeyv12
Age: 6|  Weight: 8-9| J: Jane Elliott(3)| T: Tom Dascombe| OR:  83
40/1
Edging slowly back down the weights, and tough to say that he's been overly productive on the AW during the winter; now rated 6lb lower than when beaten a head by today's rival Kaeso at Chester (7½f, good) in August 2018.

Without a win on turf (0-11) and still rated 5lb higher than when beating Savannah Moon by almost 3L at Newcastle (7f) in June 2017; kept good company in early 2018 (fifth in the Spring Mile); off the track for 280-days.

Verdict

The Lincoln aside, this is by far the most competitive 1m handicap of the turf season so far, and a race which should yield any number of future winners. Unexposed horses worth keeping on side of include Markazi, New Graduate and Rise Hall, but there are others who make even more appeal. Any sustained market support for Qaysar could prove illuminating, whilst the Les Eyre-trained Dawaaleeb has already proved to be a shrewd purchase, and should benefit immeasurably from a run at Doncaster. However, if there is to be a Group performer lurking, it's almost certainly the returning BOWERMAN (Roger Varian) who has done nothing other than impress thus far.
  1. Bowerman
  2. Qaysar
  3. Dawaaleeb
