Only had one win in 16 starts now and didn't look like adding to that tally towards the end of last season. May just need this run, but dangerously low mark now and noted should be strong in betting.
Productive winter campaign on the AW leaves him in good shape, but nagging doubts as to whether he'll produce similar form back on the turf.
Blinkers are tried on return to the turf and has been going well enough on the AW of late to suggest it would be churlish to cross him off the list.
No win in nine starts for this trainer, but hit the crossbar over this trip at Doncaster on good to soft back in October. Rated 2lb higher on first outing of 2019, could run into the places.
Won on first start season over further at Haydock on good to firm ground, not that much else to be positive about with form having tailed off at the end of last season.
Winner off this mark at Musselburgh in September, has been running well enough of late on the AW but this drop in trip is a minor cause for concern.
Form in three starts doesn't suggest a win is imminent, though this trip is more suitable and booking of Paul Hanagan for first foray into handicaps draws attention.
Mark Johnston was struggling to unlock any potential in this filly and she hasn't shown anything in a pair of AW starts for current trainer to warrant support.
Won a C&D seller winner here in October for John Quinn, and went close from just 1lb lower on debut for this trainer on the AW over 1m1½f in November. Poor back there following month and now returns from a break needing to bounce back.
Has won his last two AW starts at Southwell, most recently in January. Resumes on a lower turf mark but not certain to be as effective over this longer distance.
Shock 40-1 winner last summer over an extended-mile at Hamilton. Just mixed form thereafter but stays this far and potentially well-handicapped if ready to roll first time out.
Struggling on the AW of late and doesn't make any significant appeal racing from 9lb out of the handicap now back on turf.
Forecasts
Maghfoor (11/4), Mr Coco Bean (9/2), Captain Pugwash (13/2), Dutch Coed (13/2), Restive (7/1), Acadian Angel (10/1), Champagne Rules (11/1), Zealous (14/1), Highwayman (25/1), Duke Of Yorkshire (25/1), Tarnhelm (50/1), Gabriel's Oboe (50/1)
Champagne Rules has been in excellent heart on the AW recently and would be high on the list were he sure to transfer that form across, though that is not the case. Recent Southwell winner Mr Coco Bean is considered, but has stamina to prove, while Zealous has claims on his Doncaster run towards the backend of last season. Gabriel's Oboe and Maghfoor should be monitored but perhaps last summer's Hamilton winner DUTCH COED can take advantage of this mark now. He stays the trip fine and this is not a race with outstanding candidates.
- Dutch Coed
- Champagne Rules
- Zealous
