Just poor form in three qualifying runs in the summer, but gelded prior to nursery debut over C&D, and duly improved when 1½L third of 14 to Padura Brave, running on strongly. Better to come, and could be well treated off 1lb higher.

Well held in four starts over 6f, but better expected sent handicapping over 1m at Chelmsford last time. Failed to improve, however, looking awkward under pressure, and blinkers quickly reached for.

Full-brother to useful 2-y-o 1m winner Magic Dancer, and improved on earlier efforts when clear second in a 1m Leicester nursery last month. Ran poorly behind Purgatory here last time, but possibly found that coming too soon. Wears cheekpieces now.

Seemed to appreciate drop back to 7f when not beaten all that far on handicap debut at Yarmouth, and similar form when fourth of 12 to Dancing Jo in a 7f event here last time. Didn't seem to stay when last tried at this trip on turf.

Best effort to date when fifth of 10 at Lingfield in July, and has had wind surgery since running poorly at Windsor the following month. May improve in this sphere, but opening mark looks very stiff.

Didn't show a great deal in three qualifying runs and beaten 6½L when third on handicap bow at Leicester. Held by runner-up Royal Dancer on that form, just 4lb better off for a 3¾L beating.

Ran her best race when a staying-on sixth of 14 in a C&D nursery on her penultimate start, but not in the same form at Wolverhampton last time. Possible to excuse that, and claims if she can build on earlier promise.

Form regressed in three qualifying runs and 1m seemed too far at Windsor (soft) on last of them. Fared little better for fitting of blinkers when ninth of 12 to Dancing Jo in a 7f nursery here last time.

Form to date is very patchy, and she finished last in a Maisons-Laffitte claimer on her most recent start. Cheekpieces tried now, but she has plenty to prove.

Well held in four starts to date, including when always in rear in a 7f nursery here on latest outing. Tried in headgear now, but makes very little appeal.

Only shown flashes of ability since returning from a gelding operation, although possible to take more encouragement from latest fifth of 12 in a 6f nursery here. Visor he's worn of late left off for this market step up in trip.

Generally been soundly beaten in varied company, and while he wasn't beaten far in a 1m2f maiden at Chelmsford last time, there's a decent chance he was flattered by setting his own pace there.

Nearer last than first on all four starts to date, showing very little. Gelded prior to this handicap bow, but takes a considerable leap of faith to support him on racecourse evidence.

Purgatory (11/4), In The Cove (4/1), Kahina (9/2), Torolight (7/1), Catch The Cuban (8/1), Symphony (8/1), Toro Dorado (9/1), Royal Dancer (14/1), The Grey Dancer (25/1), Siona's Boy (25/1), Ginge N Tonic (33/1), Habanera (66/1), Milldean Billy (80/1), Penfriend (100/1)

Verdict

PURGATORY was backed as if improvement was expected here last time, and ran well to be placed. He will have learnt from that initial handicap experience, and appeals as being a little bit better than this grade when fully tuned up. Kahina is worth forgiving a modest run last time, and is capable of better at this trip, so is feared most. Royal Dancer was well behind the selection here last time, but went off favourite for that race, and is surely better than he showed.

  3. Royal Dancer
