Only narrowly denied at Windsor prior to finishing fifth in a big field at Goodwood (7f) on nursery bow. Slowly away there, and would have gone very close with an even break. Leading claims.

Favourite on nursery debut at Newmarket, but probably found softening ground against him, and made amends in similar event at Newbury last time. 5lb rise demands further progress, but he's got a positive profile overall.

Best effort when third in a 6f novice at Haydock last month, but disappointed when only fourth in a maiden at Hamilton last time. Mixed messages as to suitability of this trip, but could do better.

Has plenty of experience to call upon, and ran well when second at Chepstow in June, but quite headstrong (has been led to post), and seems unlikely to be suited by this trip, even if back to form.

Well backed when winning at Salisbury (5f, heavy) on his second outing, and handled quicker ground when second at Chepstow in June. Below form when beaten 5L on nursery debut last time, and just 1lb lower here.

Shaped well on debut, and built on that when fourth behind a couple of useful prospects over 6f at Nottingham last time. Handicapper hasn't been harsh with initial assessment, and he is bred to improve for the step up to 7f.

Placed twice on Tapeta at Wolverhampton, and shaped as if this trip would suit when running on late for second in a 6f maiden there last time. Needs to prove as effective on turf, but may well do so.

Hasn't been disgraced in nurseries at 6f/7f but not progressing at present, and latest second at Chelmsford hasn't worked out.

Forecasts

Barristan The Bold (1/1), Even Keel (4/1), Reconnaissance (9/2), Smile A Mile (10/1), Uncle Jerry (10/1), Steeve (12/1), Big Boots (28/1), Camachess (40/1)

Verdict

Barristan The Bold went into the notebook as a future nursery winner after catching the eye at Goodwood, and he is expected to go well, but preference is for handicap debutant RECONNAISSANCE, who was a good fourth in what looked a very warm contest by Nottingham standards last time, and he's sure to progress now tackling a longer trip. Even Keel won a similar event at Newbury on his latest start, and should give a good account despite a 5lb rise.
